What's new

The locals are going crazy!

So there is a local antique store nearby. I popped in there about six months ago with the kids just for fun on a day off. There was a (one... only one) straight razor at the time. It was in ok shape but smaller than what I normally go for and when I asked about other razors they said that they don't carry razors because they aren't safe. Oh, yeah, there was a room full of gun, swords and knives there too.

Any way....

I left my name and number and said to call me if they find any. I got a call three months ago and picked up a nice 6/8 IXL with a cracked scale for $15. There were some others but chipped and or cracked. Was I lucky? Maybe. I recieved another call and went to go check it out. What do I find you may ask? There are three duplex, two weck, and a handful of straights all with chips, cracks, rust, scales in various states of disrepair (including authentic tortoise with bug holes and 1/2 inch gouges that show the lead spacer). All garbage... :mad3:

Chris, you say, this is a long story....
... I'm getting to the punchline, I say...

The prices on most of the stuff is $43 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ARE THEY CRAZY?)

Same thing happened with letterpress items over the last 10 years - first antique shops had a few interesting pieces, not its all trashed wood or lead type, and broken up type cases that they want a fortune for. One thing we can say about the razors is that they aren't making the situation any worse - with some of the woodtype fonts they are breaking up 100 year old collections of type and selling individual letters to crafts people.

Same as rusted razors, if someone will buy it they'll keep offering to sell them...
