What's new

The Journal Of Huck...

Ok then. I have pretty much finished with my testing etc of my R41 and Flexi OC adjustable so it was time to get back to my other razors.
Today it was the Blutt BR1.20. A quiet looking razor that gives outstanding shaves. Very easy to use and manoeuvre with. Great balance and a good handle. My typical WTG and ATG with some buffing shave. This is a razor I can just grab and shave with. Very intuitive to use and as easy as a CART.
Paired up with a PolSilver that has a few shaves on it...just a relaxing, no drama shave. This is a shaver you can put on auto-pilot.
Used my copper Zenith boar brush, Mitchell wool fat soap in an antique gravy/cream boat and lathered up.
Then the alum bar and finished with Dior Sauvage AS balm.
Such a nice start to my day
Cheers!

I'm sorry for the stupid question. I often see WTG and ATG in messages about shaving. What does this mean?

So in 10 days we're flying to Halifax to start our fall Leaf-turning tour of E. Canada. I've never been to E. Canada and I'm really looking forward to this. Hopefully everyone will be ok after the last hurricane and there'll be some good weather in Nova Scotia. From there we'll take the train to Montreal for sightseeing, then train to Oshawa and Bowmanville to see some relatives and take in Ontario scenery. Then to Niagara-On-The-Lake, the Shaw festival and then Toronto for some sightseeing, catch a show and then back home by train. Really looking forward to this.
So I've modified my Dopp kit for traveling. I recentlypurchased and tested the Shave It co's "Shadow" aluminum razor. I generally don't care for light razors but I was amazed by this razors comfort, efficiency and ease of use. In fact, I liked it so much...I bought another one. Now this one I have put into my travel kit and replaced the Merkur head with the Shadow head. I'm using the same handle from the Merkur which fits the new head perfectly. Coupled with Parma-Shave blades...I'm good to go.
Other components include a collapsible silicone shave bowl for lathering, Tabac soft soap in a tube and Speick AS balm.
I haven't decided on which brush to take yet...it's either the Edwin Jagger take-apart travel brush or my AP Shave Co synth with a clear plastic travel tube.
I have gotten my kit down to what is a really good combo for me. I gave up on sticks because I just don't like rubbing the soap on my face and then lathering. This way I can take some different soft soaps with me.
Cheers!

That sounds like a fun trip! If you need to replenish any shaving kit when you get to the Dirty 'Shwa I may be able to help you out!!

Well, the R41 arrived yesterday and I have to admit, for me, it's a pretty plain looking razor...reputation not withstanding. So what I did was to get a Muhle Rytmo SB Razor as well. I swapped the handles so the R41 now has a good looking handle. The other razor is currently boxed up in the drawer. I may drag it out to see how it shaves as well. I loaded a Nacet that had some shaves on it just to err on the side of caution. So I built my lather using Henri et Victoria soft soap awith an AP synth brush and lathered up. I noticed the Nacet was dragging a bit so I changed to a Perma-Sharp that had a couple of shaves less on it. That seemed to cure the drag issue. Nice shave, pretty intuitive and the new handle worked well. It is very efficient and gave me a nice two pass with some buffing shave. I will be using a new blade for the next shave now that I have some feeling for this razor. A couple of small weepers that the alum bar took immediate care of so nothing dramatic. I chalk that up to perhaps the blade having some shaves on it and a bit of a learning curve for me. Topped off with Bulgary "Man" black cologne.
I would actually say the Flexi OC on 6 is a bit more aggressive than the R41.
All in all a very nice smooth shave, I will shave in a couple of days to allow the beard to give the razor something to work with. A much better razor from the original which tended to leave me in shreds.
Cheers.

Glad you like it! It's a great razor and not over aggressive as I've always read.
And yes, the Flexi OC is definitely more aggressive!

I look forward to living vicariously through your travels. The only color change we get down here is when we enter into drought conditions and the grass dies. Haha.

So in 2018 my wife took me on a whisky tour of Scotland which I've spoken of earlier. We landed in. Dublin and spent a few days there. Great country, wonderful people, gorgeous scenery and spectacular buildings, castles, churches and bars/pubs.

We went to and saw Kilmainham prison (Dublin) which is the infamous jail where so much of Irish history was incarcerated. A very unpleasant place to be a prisoner.
"From the 1798 rebellion, to the 1916 Easter Rising, the Anglo-Irish War (1919-21), to the devastation of the Irish Civil War (1922-23) all these important events have a chapter in the story of Kilmainham Gaol".

Lots of churches and pubs, which in Ireland goes hand-in-hand as far as relative closeness in the cities. In the country they seem to be a bit more spread out.
Saw Blarney castle which was cool but didn't kiss the rock because of the lineups. Love those old castles and churches...just beautiful to see and wander around in. You half expect the Monty Python crew to pop out at any moment.

First 2 pics are the Kilmainham jail. The next 4 are of a country church where they still held small services in a small chapel but the main part of the church is without roofs etc but great to wander around in.
The next pic is Blarney Castle.
The next two pics are from the Jameson distillery and the Brazen Head...the oldest pub in Ireland.
The last place is another beautiful church in a small town outside of Dublin.
A wonder filled place to visit and we'll be going back to see more of the "Emerald Isle".

Still in the waaayback machine...we went o Mexico and stayed just outside Playa Del Carmen. On one of our side trips we went to Chichen Itza to see the ancient Mayan city. Amazing. Very well kept and restored. Because of the jungle growth the gov't is still discovering new ruins to excavate. Fascinating history. Very advanced and at times violent. But still spectacular to see. Went deep-sea fishing and managed to catch a whole lot of nothing except for some small stuff. Oh well.

We stayed at a hotel that was for the most part ok. Lots of Coatimundi wandering around and they travel in largish groups. And I managed to get a pic of a small croc hiding in the bushes beside one of the hotel paths.
Now I managed to miss one of our side trips because I caught one of the ubiquitous "stomach bugs" from something in the hotel buffet. Well...that was almost 2 days of not leaving the room except to get some bananas and yogurt. My partner also caught this just before we were leaving so the flight back was not fun.:001_07:

Anyway we survived and decided that we were kind of done with Mexico for the time being. Which is too bad because there's a huge amount of history to see and experience there. But I would say if you're going, to stay at a top hotel. I know lots of people who had zero issues at those places.

Have a terrific weekend!

Ok then, so we start our E.Canada vacation tomorrow. Yay. Because we live in a small city that doesn't have a lot of carrier options we have to generally, fly to another city before flying to where we want to go. We live in Regina so to go to Halifax we first have to fly to Calgary...THEN to Halifax. We've had overlay times ranging from 2-12 hours. It is what it is. Anyway, we're landing in Nova Scotia and will spend a few days driving around the province and then take the train to Montreal. We will keep renting cars to sightsee with but will travel to different cities etc by train. Then after we're done it's the train back to Sask. Now we cannot de-train in Regina because they converted the station to a casino. So we get off in Melville which is about 1.5 hours outside of Regina where the Missus' daughter will pick us up. That's what I really like about the UK you can take the train to literally anywhere and bus it from there or cycle. I will do updates with pics as we go forward. Really looking forward to this and I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
Cheers!
