The "Inbetween" Coat

Even though I am still in the middle of a very cold Chicago winter, I have started thinking I need to invest in new coat that is not so heavy that I can wear as it warms up. I have black leather jacket, but the zipper has failed me, so I am left with a jean jacket, my Detroit Red Wings wind breaker, and fleece zip up. While I like all 3 of those coats, I am looking for something a little more sophisticated. I have gotten used to my 3/4 length black Wool Coat this winter and I think I will feel sad if I have to go back to the jean jacket.

I still need to look in to seeing how much it will cost to get the zipper replaced on leather jacket, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions.

This is all part of my goal to have my wardrobe revamped and classed up by the end of the year.

How about a military style jacket? Usually they are made of wool but I also have one made of khaki for the spring time. You could also consider layering a blazer over a sweater.

Don't hesitate to ask several estimates and negociate to repair your leather jacket, it would be sad for it to be sentenced to remain in the closet for a simple zipper.

I do have a dark brown blazer that I do use as jacket sometimes. The big problem with that is that the wind cuts right through it. I do like that idea though.

I'll second getting the zipper replaced. The cost should be far less than what the jacket cost. Additionally, if it is just that the zipper is not catching the teeth anymore and therefor nto closing you can try pinching the sides of it close again with a pair of needle nose pliers.

I've decided on the blazer/sweater route. Much cheaper as I've already got all the necessary components and can't find a cheap "in between" jacket.

The problem with the zipper is that in a couple of spots the "teeth" have gotten loose and spread apart so they do not stay together and the zipper just opens up.

And upon further review, while I do like that blazer/ sweater combo, I would need to invest in some better fitting sweaters. Mine have either shrunk or stretched out.

You know you can replace the entire zipper right? Its not nearly as expensive as you think. Unless you think its $20-40.

I honestly have no idea how much it would cost. I think $20 - $40 would be alright. I have been meaning to take it with me whenever I go visit my folks as my mom is something of an expert with the sewing machine and it is something she enjoys doing. The only problem is I do not think I'll be able to get to Ohio before it warms up.

its actually pretty warm in about 35-40 degrees anyway with a light sweater underneath.

I just don't like buying synthetic stuff. I feel the oil is better used being burned up in my car.

Ok, on a more serious note, I like the feel of all organic materials better. Just a personal preference.

well yeah all natural would be better, and probably cost $300...The nylon/cotton outer makes it water resistant. The lining however, is polyester and there's no excuse for that.

As a second coat, I would suggest looking into a raincoat of some kind. It can be worn as a light topcoat in warmer weather and then will keep you dry when things get miserable.
Having your other zipper repaired is probably very worthwhile too!
