The horsehair brush in a lecture to student nurses: anthrax trivia

Last Thursday, I guest-lectured at Temple University's School of Nursing, where I teach clinical as a part-time adjunct professor. Since I'm a currently practicing ER nurse, I had been asked to lecture to the students on emergency and disaster nursing. These included bioterrorism, which of course begets a discussion of anthrax. My anthrax PowerPoint slide had the anthrax-horsehair connection information, including the history. My lead to track that story down came from luvmysuper, whom I referenced at the end of my lecture.

Unfortunately, while there were a number of men in this senior undergraduate nursing class, I doubt any of them really knew for what purpose one uses a shaving brush. Yes, it was obvious that none knew of the art of wet shaving; all of the men were followers of the Don Johnson 96-hour shadow school of not shaving.

Be that as it may, I would like to include two of my slides here to show you that, even though by day I am a mild-mannered emergency nurse at a great metropolitan hospital, I am a wetshaver at heart and always find ways to incorporate the topic into my daily life (and to spread the word to the shaving heathen of the world).

Growing up as the grandson of a barber, I always expect my students to shave their male patients. Those patients always tell me they feel better after a nice wet shave.

Mal',

I own a Vie-Long 13061 and I never thought mine would infect me. But, OMG, did it stink and produce a brown funk instead of lather when it was new!

They show a Vie-Long , which will not infect you,guaranteed !!

I read some of the common medical practices from the late 1800's and early 1900's and am not surprised that an outbreak occurred. We certainly have the benefit of modern medicine behind us today.

Luckily I've Yet to get any malignant pustules from my Turkish Number 6. That's a cool explanation for the comparative rarity of the HH brush.

I believe that's the brush I purchased from malocchio a few years ago. Nice to know I am going to live.
