The Escali Shave Brush - a new guys experience

Having received my Escali (100% pure badger shave brush) from Amazon today, cost around 13 dollars, same as the tweezerman, as well as receiving a tub of TOBS Mr. Taylor Cream, I decided to test the brush out - prior to breaking it in.

So I guess I'll cover the basic first:

- It lathered well, in fact, better than the free VDH boar I have (though this may have been due to the cream. Will test tomorrow)
- it shed a bit. Not much more than the VDH though, so after the first pass I simply washed my face, and the shed hairs were no longer a problem.
- The handle is light, potentially fake wood. Couldn't really say. Felt good in my hand though.

Now on to the warning:

The brush was pretty scratchy. And when I say pretty, I mean a lot. I had the brush soaking for a while and kept it wet, so I know that it wasn't too dry. In fact, I gave myself (literal) brush burn on my right cheek (though the redness is fading a little bit, and some balm helped cool it). I know it's not razor burn, as nowhere are there bumps, nicks, or scratches on the cheek or anywhere else on the face.

So, I chalk it up to using a new brush (and perhaps going too hard on the cheek) without breaking it in first.

I'm hoping that breaking it in following the methods on the site, will alleviate some scratchiness as well as the smell.

And yes, I used a cartridge razor (but like i said, no problems anywhere else, face is completely smooth) , plan on ordering a Lord l6 next paycheck.

So what can I say about it? I won't call it awful, because it performs (aside from the burn) better than the VDH boar. Though I will keep this updated as I break it in, and see how that goes.

Anyone have any thoughts on the brush, if they've used it, or any ideas on how to break it in for more softness?

I was my first brush too, and it was too scratchy for me. It never really softened up enough. It was fine for starting out, but I much prefer my SOC boar brush now.

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled on the B/T/S forum for some more brushes. Any recommendations?

Omega Pro 49 (and Pro 48) Boar
Semogue 830 & 1350 Boar
Vie Long Horsehair
Whipped Dog Badger

was the consensus on inexpensive brushes in a recent thread.

Sounds good.

I should update that, after soap washing, and letting it soak in dish soap water while at work tonight, I rinsed some gross looking water out of the bowl, and brush and a little more shedding. Felt softer on the arm, and left side of my face with a quick swirl to test. Then whipped some lather from cream (more shedding) and it is currently sitting to dry overnight with the lather.

Hoping that softens it up, just a little bit more, as well as kills the smell (somewhere between treated animal, and plastic packaging)

Edit: I've heard a lot of good things about the omega 49. It may be my next boar brush of good quality. I want to have a boar and badger (cheap or moderate priced, of decent quality) to have some variety in the experience. So that may be one of my next purchases :D

Edit again: Can anyone recommend the Whipped Dog Silvertip? I would probably get the 20mm in resin if i bought one (unless one pops up for sale here). I just want to know about the softness and general quality of the brush.

A big yes on the Whipped Dog Silvertips! I have one in 24mm and it's a tremendous brush for the price. It's one of my favorite brushes. The other being my new B&B Essential (boar) brush.

:D I'll see about ordering one soon then.

As for my face, another round of balm after work last night helped diminish the problem this morning. And I used the escali (after washing out the dried lather) to whip up some lather and shave. Much smoother and softer than it had been before, but I still wouldn't face lather with it, which is my preferred method since i feel that it gives a thicker and slicker lather, for me anyway, than in the bowl. Still a pretty darn good shave today with no pain or bumps.

But yes, the suggestions have inspired me to perhaps order a 20 or 24mm silvertip. Would you say those are better than the black knots also available on the site?

I don't know about the black badger as I don't have one, but I do hear they are more scritchy - maybe along the lines of the Escali.

Also talk to Larry (Whipped Dog) about your lathering style and he will get you set up. As you are a face latherer, you will probably want the silvertip knot set deeper and Larry will work with you to get what you need.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I mix up lathering on occasion, but for the most part, I face lather. My bowl lather (once made) seems somewhat thin, but the razor still glides over with no problem. I just feel safer with the thicker face lather. It's nice to know he actually cares about customers!

Definitely looking into it.
