THE Definitive Cold Weather Scent

S

Sam

What scent only works in cold weather? For me, something heavy, maybe oriental, like Calvin Klein Obsession. Others?

Gucci Rush is not cheap since they discontinued it! Have a look at EBay. A vastly underappreciated frag. I would not limit it to cold weather--a great Fall frag, I would say, very woody-but it might show at its very best in cold weather.

I would consider Aramis fairly versitile weather-wise.

I am drawing a blank re cold weather only. I tend to wear anything any time. Maybe some of the aouds?

If it does not have to be cold weather only but just really shows at its best in cold weather, maybe Montale Santal de Mysore, or SL Ambre Sultan? Maybe many of the other Montales and SLs, too. I do not know there all that well!

I do not like those burning wood scents much, but I suppose they would be cold weather only, if at all!

I find the Polo in the green bottle to be more of a winter-time scent (though I wear it occasionally in the summer because it is my wife's favorite).

Anything heavy or incense-y works beautifully in cold weather for me. Sonoma Scent Studio's Incense Pure, for example. Also, I think a "gothic" frag like #88 works best in depths of winter.

Creed Acier Aluminium = the cold depths of outer space.

Now there is an advertising tag line Creed should be paying you to use!

+1 on C&S F&M being a wintery scent. Partly, I think, because of the associatons of the main "characters" in the scent with the winter holiday season, and partly because it is something of an incense frag and I think there is something to be said for incense frags to show best in colder weather.

I think pine-forward scents work well in the winter because of the association of pine with winter holiday decorations, etc. However, at the same time, pine to me has a big outdoorsy association that brings up associations of being outside in warmer conditions. Thus, hard for me to say that pine scents are at their best in cold weather!

Scents with lots of cinammon, aside from Bay Rum because of its island associations, may also work best in the winter/cold weather because of holiday associations to cinammon and similar spices.

Aramis ... Gives that 'cousy' warm feeling you get when your wrapped up in a blanket with SWMBO, watching The Godfather!

The one that I really like on a snowy Winter day is L'Artisan's Passage d'Enfer. The frankincense and myrrh undertones remind me of an old cathedral during Christmas time. I recently picked up L'Occitane's Eav de Bavx which has similar base notes but a sweeter top end. I like it a lot and is about a third the price of L'Artisan's product.

When you say winter, what exactly do you mean? On the bitterest of winter days, my three favorites are the following. The list expands somewhat on milder days.

The Knize Ten.
Andy Tauer's Lonestar Memories.
Maître Parfumeur et Gantier - Eau des Îles

I find L'Artisan to produce some amazing fragrances, so I agree here.

I've spent almost 50 winters in the varying harshness of the Canadian Shield, and from my experience, spicy topnotes and undertones tend to do best in cold weather.

Recently, after using a variety of fraqgrances, I have come to find Molton Brown's Black Pepper eau de cologne to be an outstanding choice for winter wear. The thing is, it can work very well on certain people in the summer as well. It is spicey (patchouli, oakmoss, corriander, ginger) and is absolutely unique in my opinion.

I have found MB products to be of outstanding quality, and are very well worth the price. In summer, I frequently use MB Cassia body spray, a light yet spicy-citurs blend that is incomparable and perfect for summer use.

From the Penhaligon's line, which I also use a fair bit, I suggest Endymion and Love Potion # 9 for the really cold, long dark days, and Racquets for the sunny cold days.

Best,

Chris

I've been thinking about this as the weather gets warm. I tend to relegate Knize Ten, Vintage Tabarome and Trumper's Spanish Leather to the colder months. But I don't think that's an ironclad rule. The other day it was up in the high 90s here and I decided to see what Knize Ten would wear like. I must say that it was pretty darn good.
