A holdover from the late 19th century. Velvet was thought to capture the smoke smell and keep it from traveling throughout the house. Or on your good shirt and jacket. So that Victorian style of grand opulence was in vogue.I wonder why smoking jackets all seemed to have that "handed down from a New Orleans Madam" vibe to them?
That was quite expensive. From The Cabin Coffee Table — An occasional look back at what the old Codgers saw and smoked (with a little detour and frolic, here and there):

Or the day the kids leaveYeah at $10, that's a special occasion gift. Like a first Father's Day.

There was an old roadside zoo we used to explore in Austin,Tx on N Lamar called the Coxville. As younger kids we’d do it during the day as teenagers we’d go at night. It was very spooky to be in that old zoo that closed 20-30yrs prior. The wind would blow, a cage door would creak, and I swear the lions were loose in the grass behind us.Yes, it's an Optimo crown. Also, a reminder of a time when roadside zoos were a thing.
@seabee1999 has first hand knowledge of a roadside zoo specializing in tigers that used to run near him...There was an old roadside zoo we used to explore in Austin,Tx on N Lamar called the Coxville.
