What's new

The brush that killed my AD

A while ago I decided that I wanted to try a boar brush. I decided to get the Vulfix Hyde Park seen here because it has a solid handle. After trying it for a few weeks, I realized I liked badger better, so I ordered a Finest two-band badger knot from Tony here and re-knotted the handle. What I created was a face lathering machine that works for both creams and soaps. It's amazing! I ended up paying about $36 total. I've actually sold all my other brushes!

Nice job fella and kudos to you for letting your other brushes find new homes. I only have one badger brush and I'm happy with it but it doesn't mean I don't like to look.

I've settled in on those TGN/Penworks finest knots. I have one 22mm (for days when I only do a 2 pass shave), a 24mm (in my Grandfather's handle--I don't want to use this much so that I can pass it on to my boy) and a 26mm for those 4 pass + days. They are tremendous knots.

Yeah, they're great knots. I was a bit worried when I first felt the knot, as they feel really coarse when dry, but as soon as you soak them, they become luxuriously soft without any hint of floppiness.

The finest is so great.
A tremendous value for the money you pay!

A have both a 20 mm extra stuffed & a 22mm regular fan shape. Both are superb

Nice job! I also really like the TGN Finest knots. I have reknotted 4 brushes with various size Finest knots from TGN and have been very pleased with the performance of all of them.

My Rooney 3/1 Pure and Edwin Jagger medium Best are gathering dust ever since I restored an Ever-Ready with TGN 2 band Finest. I love the soft tips coupled with some nice backbone not to mention the 2 band knot just looks like a million bucks :thumbup1:

Really nice. I know this is an ignorant question, but what adhesive did you use?

I have a couple handles I like, but the knots are ridiculously floppy. I'd like to re-knot them but have been told duct tape will not help me with this, so I just stare at them on the shelf.

I used epoxy. Any corner hardware store has the stuff, just make sure you get clear. There are a couple restoration threads somewhere on the site. I'll try to find them.

I absolutely love my TGN Super badger fan knot. Its 20mm but feels huge [cos its a fan], I love the way it splays out a little and has such soft luxurious tips.

It sure does, especially with a white handle. I'm going to replace the boar knot in my Vulfix 2233 with a TGN one day. I just need to choose which one. My Vulfix has a great handle but it's the softest, floppiest brush I own. Soft is good, floppy isn't (for me).
