The Barber Shop-tipping

Can't think of a better place to introduce this topic, namely tipping in a barbershop in our own "barbershop". I was introduced to this concept by my late dad. He always gave a small percentage based tip to the barber that cut his hair. I continue to do so and have made sure my son does as well. I am not saying it's right or wrong just that we do. Any gentlemanly comments about this?

I always tipped the barber back when I actually had hair to cut. Everyone I know always tipped the barber. It was just the same as tipping a waitress to us military guys...good haircut, good tip.

I've been using the same barber for many years. He charges $15 and I give him a $20. When you think of it, $5 doesn't buy much and I won't miss it.

same here , walk-in only shop, $15 for seniors & I give him $20; he has to fund his own pension & healthcare premiums , i feel good leaving him extra !!

I tried a new barber last night and he also charges $15 and I left him a $20. Great guy, great haircut, and only 5 minutes from my house. He's the only guy in the shop and has been doing it in the same storefront for 33 years. Has been a barber for about 50.

Now half as wise
I do the same. By his reaction the first time I went, I'm not sure it's that common anymore. He's always told me that if I'm running late after the office, just call him and he'll wait for me. I've never had to do that but it's nice to know that it's appreciated.

I've always tipped the barber. But i've been going to military barber shops my whole life. Its what my dad did so I continue to do it.
I like that its never expected by the barbers. I cannot stand tip jars. My opinion has always been, do a good job or go the extra mile and the tip will reflect that. perform you job to the minimum acceptable level and you get what I paid you. I make a point to always tip barbers, wait staff, bartenders and the like

Speaking of horse butts…
Same here. I go to this great little shop nearby, Brian Bunce Barbers. It's got old time barbershop collectables all over and everyone there is friendly and gives a great haircut. Usually haircuts are $16 and I give them a $20. Lately though everyone has been charging me the "senior" rate of only $12 and when I expalin I am not a senior they say $12 is fine anyway. I give a $5 tip anyway. I guess the white beard makes them unsure of my age.

Yesterday I had the owner cut my hair and tipped him out of habit. Typically one does not tip the owner, just the workers.

so if you're not really a senior why not just continue to give them the $20 ; $5 on $12 is a bigger % but they're getting less ; if you felt comfortable with $20 before you found out about the senior "deal" I would think you would just continue paying $20 ??

i've always tipped at least $5. and i even remember when i was young my dad would tip. my hometown barber would charge 15 i'd give a 20. but after a couple years his price went up to 17 and i still gave him a 20. i just cant pay more than 20 for a hair cut.

When I was enlisted a haircut at my barber was $7 and took under 5 minutes. I paid with a $10 every time. When I got out, I discovered that apparently the same haircut away from a large base costs $15-17, I used to pay $20. Now my wife cuts my hair and we spend the money on dinner or antique shops.

Good cuts deserve good tips. The same cut done using less of my time deserves a better tip IMHO.

I'll respectfully disagree with you on that. If you are satisfied with the haircut and the service, why not? He's done the same work for you.

Business owners these days sometimes get the short end of the stick. They do all the work, pay all the bills, put up with the people working there and if it wasn't for them taking the risk to have their business, that shop you like wouldn't be there and you'd be getting your hair cut at (gulp) the mall.

Me too. I have been going to the same place for 20 years. A handful of times my guy wasn't there, so I got cut by the owner. He received the same tip my barber does. My cut is $16, so I give $20.
