Thayer's Witch Hazel

FYI B&Ber's

Thayers Witch Hazel is $8.29 at my local Whole Foods this week. You might want to check your local Whole Foods store to check if this special applies in your area.

i went to WF but it was 10 dollars, i got the 2 dollar cheap witch hazel instead and it seems to work just fine

I stayed away from Thayer's at first, but now that I have some, I can tell you that at $10 a bottle, its worth it. It feels much better on my skin than the generic Witch Hazel, and when I've had some real cuts and rawness to my skin from work, Thayer's heals it up in record time.

My shave-den will never be without Thayer's again.

I agree, and if you read the back of the Thayer's label, it says it isn't distilled (like regular WH), comes from bark instead of the leaf. Supposed to be 30% more astringent than distilled, leaf WH's. And it's got Aloe Vera in it. All in all worth the extra $$$, IMHO.

+1 What he said. I also like Thayers Superhazel which is medicated.

I'm on my third bottle of the Rose. I usually get mine at WH as well. I didn't shave today but I splashed some on my face anyway, just because I like it so much.

Recently I decided that I will keep both Thayer's and regular cheapo witch hazel on hand. Sometimes, after a particularly rough shave, a little alcohol is a good thing. Plus it's also good for making sure you get all the soap and cream residue off your face if you're using a particularly thick, fatty cream or soap.

Here's the scoop in a nutshell. Thayer's doesn't have alcohol in it.

The essential oil of witch hazel is not sold separately as a consumer product. The plant does not produce enough essential oil to make production viable, however, there are various distillates of witch hazel (called hydrosols or hydrolats) that are gentler than the "drug store" witch hazel and contain alcohol.

Witch hazel is mainly used externally on sores, bruises, and swelling. The main constituents of the extract include tannin, gallic acid, catechins, proanthocyanins, flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin), essential oil (carvacrol, eugenol, hexenol), choline, saponins, and bitters. Distilled witch hazel sold in drug stores and pharmacies typically contains no tannin.”

I was unhappy with Thayers as it seems to leave a sticky residue. I am assuming this is from the aloe. Dickensons and plain drugstore brands dry completely and very quickly. I emailed the Thayers people and asked if any of their WH products did NOT have aloe and their answer is that ALL Thayers WH products contain aloe.

So, if anyone knows of a non-alcohol, non-distilled WH I would like to hear about it!

Actually, it might have been the Glycerin that left a sticky residue, not the Aloe.

A very good possibility.

I notice that both glycerin and Aloe come before WH extract in the ingredients list. Aloe first. Should be called Thayers Aloe Rinse!

I stand corrected. Both astringent and alcohol-free are in the Thayers lineup. The definition of astringent is here.

Thayers Original is astringent. Various other Thayers, including Unscented, are named "alcohol-free toner."

By virtue of the fact Thayers goes to the trouble of distinguishing between the two, it take astringent to mean it contains alcohol.
