Thayers witch hazel - unscented redness problem

I'm a straight razor shaver and have been using witch hazel as an aftershave now when the summers here in Japan are unbelievably hot.
My problem is that my face blooms up abit after I apply it. Probably an allergic reaction, right? But here is the funny thing. I see NO redness whatsoever where I DID shave after I apply it, only on the parts on my face where the razor had no contact with my face.
Any thoughts?

I also had a poor experience with Thayer. Switched to Dickensons plain ‘ol w/h. No fancy scents, etc. apply lightly, wait a couple of minutes then rinse with cool water.
