Thater 4292/4 vs savile row 3824

Im trying to pick a new brush and have narrowed it down to these two brushes. I would like another 3band silvertip with around a 24mm knot size, very soft tips, and a slight bit of backbone (just a little more than a kent bk4). Ive read good things about both and think that both fit what im looking for, but haven't tried anything from either company myself. Can anyone who has tried both (or similar knots) weigh in and let me know what they think the differences are? Thanks!

If you want the softest, white tips, high density with zero irritation and impeccable workmanship, the Thater is the way to go.

Cannot make a mistake with either...

I have no experience with a Savile Row brush, but the Thater 4292/4 brush is a superb performer, one of my favorites. It easily generates sufficient lather for 3 + passes, whether from creams or soaps. You just can't go wrong with a Thater.

I have the SR 3824. I got it a couple weeks ago and have been using it pretty steady since. I haven't tried a Thater or the Kent BLK4 but the SR 3824 seems to be exactly what you are looking for. It has just enough backbone, but not nearly as much as a Rooney or a Simpson. It has slightly more backbone than my EJ 3 band badger though..... which is good because I find my EJ a bit too floppy. Personally, I like the handle on the SR more that the Thater.... but that's more of a YMMV thing.... which is what your decision might come down it in the end given that it appears that both brushes would fit the bill.

Enjoy whichever you decide to get..... I don't really think that you can lose on this one.

that sums up my feelings on the SR as well. I have a Thater 3 band, stout 2, used it today. Both are excellent. And like others have said, they are both amazing brush makers.

i actually listed the SR as my desert island brush yesterday. the handle, knot, softness are all top notch.

Dunno about the Thater. I have the SR. It works well for creams but in my opinion isn't well suited for soaps.

I also have found Thater 3 band to be the softest I've tried, but the SR or Shavemac silvertip are pretty similar and not far behind. I would vote for the SR.

It's difficult for me to rank any other brush in front of a Thäter. They are that good.

It seems like its split 50/50 and that both brushes are pretty similar. I understand that its tough for people to compare brushes, because not everyone has tried the brushes in question.

I currently have a kent blk4 and a morris and forndran 2band w/24mm knot. The kent, being a 3band, is definitely softer dry and wet. The M&F is a slightly prickly when dry, but not at all when wet (took a few shaves to break it in). The kent hardly has any backbone, while the m&f has quite a bit. The kent feels very luxurious, while the m&f has a soft scrubbing action.

btw...I have sensitive skin and don't like the prickly feeling. I only use soaps and always face lather.

Back on track...i think that a 3 band with a little more backbone would be a perfect blend and probably my go to brush. Any more info to help me make my choice would be awesome!

based on those descriptions, your experience with a Kent, i'd say a 3 Band Thater is what you want.

I have the Thater 4292/4. It is an awesome brush. If you have the chance to get one, then get one. It is denser and has greater backbone than the Kent. I haven't tried any Saville Row brushes.

Glad to hear it.

I would agree here. Like I said, I don't know about the Thater but to me the SR is just a little bit prickly compared to my Rooney Heritage Stubby 1XL. If you don't like prickly I'd go for a brush with softer tips.... which I can only assume that the Thater has (softer tips) based on others opinions.

Thater 3 band brushes have a unique combination of extremely soft tips and high density. If you like your Kent, you will love the Thater.

Thäter 3 band is the softest silver tip out there. Though in my case the SR 3824 turned out to be very similar...

Interesting. I have found the Savile Row Silvertips to be one of the few brushes that can significantly change character over the first number of months. I've had two go from soft tips to extremely soft tips over time.

Agree. In my arsenal the Thäter 3 band, SR 3824 and shavemac regular silvertips are the softest brushes. And then followed by some 2 bands (Thäter, Simpson, VB, WSP)

Think im going to give the thater a try. I might eventually end up with a SR as well lol .

Where's a good place to buy the thater?
