What's new

Thanks for the advice.

I honed my first razor today, and I just wanted to take the time to thank all of you who recommended TSS as a place for me to buy a coticule. And I wanted to thank everyone for the advice given on how to use it properly. I bought a 125 x 30 combo stone and got it yesterday. I got a little guy just so that if I couldn't do it I wouldn't have wasted much money. I did a lot of research on here before I used it, and many of you helped me and didn't even know it. Anyway on with the story. I have been straight shaving for around a year now, but have never tried honing. I knew I wanted to learn to use the cotiule because of the edges I have used it was my favorite. So today I honed my first razor. When I started the razor wouldn't cut arm hair so I started on the BBW side with a very heavy slurry. I have no idea how many laps it took, but I stayed on that until the razor would cut arm hair. After that I went to the Coti with a heavy slurry doing small circles and then x strokes. I gradually diluted the slurry. Once again I have no idea how many laps I did. All I know is it was a lot I suppose it was because the stone was so small. At this point I decided to do a HHT, so I plucked a chest hair and it passed. At this point I was very surprised and pleased with myself, so I went to the Wife's hair brush and got one of her hairs. I couldn't pass a HHT with her hair. So I finished the razor on straight water. I did 100 x strokes. Took the wife's hair and it would break the hair but not really cut it. So I did another 100 laps on water. Did another HHT with the wife's hair and it passed. I took the razor to my leather strop and did 60 laps. I don't know how to rate the HHT with number but after the leather strop the razor was dropping the wifes hair right when it touched it. I can't wait to shave test this bad boy tomorrow. I am so excited I hope it shaves as well as I think it will. I hope this wasn't just beginners luck and I can duplicate it next time. So once again thanks everyone for all the advice, and I am sure I will have many more questions as I go down this honing journey. My next stop will be a 175 x 50 coti from Jarrod, when the finances will allow.

Should shave nicely.

After the shave, try adding a few drops of oil on the stone and giving it another 40-50 laps.

Well the shave went great! Absolutely no pulling or tugging. The blade felt very sharp and smooth. I got zero irritation. I couldn't ask for more my first go round.
I might try the oil trick on the next razor. As for this one, I am scared of messing up a edge that I am already very happy with.:biggrin1:

If it shaves nicely I too would leave it alone. Congrats on a great shave off your own edge.

Oil IMO adds a little more keenness but maintains the smoothness.

Great job

Congrats! Yeah, to your first point, enough good can;t be said about The Superior Shave in my mind. Apart from the fact that the shipping is fast and service is great, I love shopping with seeing the pics of what I'm buying. For the same reason, I love thejapanblade.com
