Tenkara Fishing

I heard about a style of fly fishing common in Japan called Tenkara and it instantly piqued my interest. It's basically fly fishing without a reel.

I ended up ordering a rod and line set up last night and can't wait to start off the new fishing season with a new experience.

Anybody ever tried this before?

I have. I made a bamboo tenkara-esque rod from an antique salmon rod blank.
It is a little stouter than a traditional tenkara rod but serves the same purpose.

Yeah. Good results. They are great brook trout and pan fish rods. Fantastic for small streams.
A larger river they will work fine too but you will be limited by your cast distance.
Also try some of the Japanese backward tied flies.
