My two votes for the most significant inventions are the transistor and the automatic transmission.

The former is by far the most important. I recall reading (in 1998!) that they were being produced at the rate of 500,000,000 per second, and are the only item man has ever made to number in the quadrillions.

The latter has allowed everyone to drive, including the 99% that shouldn't.


I said significant, not good.
