What's new

Techmatic? What is it?

I won an auction for a lot earlier today, a nice clean looking cased Techmatic was included in the lot.

Are these injectors? Blades available? Anyone have opinions on these, are they Shick wannabe's, decent vintage Gillettes, or?

They had ribbon blades, you use it until dull, then advance the ribbon to get fresh, sharp cutting edge.

but since it was hard to keep the ribbon stiff, the shave quality was meh,
they were famous for a while becuase gillette paid a ton of money so nasa would put them in the astronaut hygine kit during the apollo missions i think, it was either apollo or mercury,

Also: here's the razor and a tube of cream they used during the Apollo missions.

The cartridges are not available anymore, other than as vintage. Schick had a similar system for a few years.

It's very much a product of its time. With the drop in cartridge and the counter, very much like an Instamatic camera.

Cool, all good to know. If there's any ribbon left in this one, and it's not corroded or bad looking, I may even give it a try-once. I'll find a corner booth in the back (display) for it :001_rolle

I bought the lot for the cased Stahly (don't know if it works or not, but for some reason I am betting it does). And an odd little brass safety razor that folds up into the handle (pretty cool, but I'll bet also proprietory blades made of unobtanium). Oh, and the price. Lot of 7, $12.20 (plus shipping). And another 1912 for my BST pile down the road...

A Gillette Techmatic was my very first razor. My Dad bought it for me in the late 1960's when I was in high school. At the time Gillette promoted it as state of the art high technology. I thought it was this really cool modern looking thing compared to the typical razors of the day. It had a long single slim blade coiled up inside the cartridge and a dial on the side that you could turn periodically that would advance the coil to an unused section, or "new blade". At the time it worked great, but I was young and my beard was more like peach fuzz back then. Brings back a lot of memories!

Hey, I think I almost bid on that lot.
If it's the same one, I believe that was a schick repeater you scored (the one that folds into the handle).
This was the one with the small cased stahly, right? Like, one just a little bigger than the razor itself?

edit: Yeah, that has to be the one. It has the stahly, the techmatic and a schick repeater.
Here is a page with some details about the Schick. Yours looks like a B2, 1927-1932

NOS cartridges turn up on eBay from time to time... but I don't know if you'll get anything more out of it than a bit of nostalgia.

Thanks guys! AMB, I didn't dream that was a Shick. Too cool, I have ZERO Shicks so far.

how much was shipping to venus?

Lol... well, I was looking for a unique way to describe where I am (bored with the usual "Metropolitan De...", well, let me show you.

Surfing the web, I got an idea. Looking up Palmistry, I found the various pics with some of the basics of palm reading. Check out the "Mount of Venus". Now look at the Southeast edge. Remind anyone of a map? :wink2:

ETA: In fairness, I chose the wrong hand pic, I see if you look at it minus the fingers, it actually looks more like the thumb is part of the Eastern Seaboard as opposed to Michigan- had I used a pic with the fingers together, I think Michigan would have been obvious. But the one up above depicted the "Mount Of Venus" a bit more clearly.

This was my first real razor. Late 1960s. My only real memory is of a rather severe gash I cut in my cheek near the jaw line. Ouch. I still carry the scar.

No kidding? Yeesh, you'd think Gillette might have vetted their new razor a little better. I guess "Hey! Let's make a razor that works like a band saw!" was too good an idea to pass up, until they figured out the two-blade cartridge.
