Tea Kettles

Gentlemen (and ladies), with the holidays fast approaching, I am in need of a few good gift suggestions. The girlfriend has taken a real shine to many types of tea lately and it dawned on me that we do not own a proper kettle.

Can anyone out there suggest any kettles? I suppose any ordinary kettle will do, but where is the fun in that if there is no story to it?

Thanks.

P.S. I am also open for suggestions on any other tea related supplies.

Over a year ago my family switched from an electric kettle to a Zojirushi hot water dispenser. They are great. Hot water (nearly) always at the ready, three different temperature settings and easy to clean.

Our all time favorite is Capresso brand. Well designed clear glass with a separate base. It heats water to boiling Fast

What you not getting her Arko?

I have a Kitchen Aid kettle. It is enamel coated inside and out so you don't get the "water-boiled-in metal" taste. I got it at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It works great, and was expensive. But sadly I now usually microwave water in my Pyrex measuring cup. It is much faster.

the bonivita variable temp kettle. it will hold the temp and also has a temp resolution of 1f increments. it comes in a widemouth or a gooseneck. depending on the tea prep methods either could be advantageous. gong fu the gooseneck would make pours amazing. but for teapot go for the widemouth.
I would second the gooseneck recommendation. Though not necessary for tea making, it is more fun to use. And better if you ever want to brew coffee in a pourover (hand filter).

We picked up a 34oz Bodum Bistro at World Market for about 1/2 price of what I've found them anywhere else, FWIW.

They're only cool if they whistle, IMO. Unless they're really old cool stuff like Legion posted, but be honest, those would be even cooler if they whistled.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I think I am going to go with the Bonavita Gooseneck. It does look nicer and I know she has been interested in the pour over coffee method.

Should I pay up for the digital temp control or just buy the ordinary electric? The difference is about $40 and I am finding it a bit hard to justify, but you guys are the experts with this.

P.S. If I bought her Arko, I'd probably have a bigger problem on my hands! :biggrin1:

definitely shell out for the temp control. the bonivita has the best temp control of any kettle out there. i mean 1 F increments and will hold the temp throughout your session. it also holds the temp withing 1f of the selected temp. no other kettle dose that. and you will be using the kettle for diferent things like tea or coffee so the temp controll is really important in tea and coffee you throw boiling water on sincha it'll jump out of the pot and slap you.

nff, you are one heck of a salesman! I went with the temp control. In the long run, it probably will be worth it.

I'll add that the temp control is/will be a nice feature. Different teas require different temperatures so as not to burn the leaf and affect the flavor. If you're into drinking coffee you can also use your electric/standard tea kettle to make a great tasting cup of coffee using a french press which can be had for around $20-$30.

Some purists will say that microwaving water to brew your tea will flatten the water molecules and reduce the oxygen, making the tea taste "flat". I'm not enough of a tea drinker to really taste the difference but I'll take their word for it.
