Now that I have TAP acrylic blocks, I see that they are protected with paper. Since many suggest putting paper on the block prior to film, should I just leave it on?

IMO you only want paper under the film for the last few very light pressure laps of the 1um film. The paper makes a slight convex edge.

Anyway, that is the wrong sort of paper. Peel it off. I don't think the film will stick to it very well.
