I've been going gang busters in ebay for old straights with the intent for restoring. Great segway from my motorcycle restoration skills as it's a great hobby to do inside the warm house during the winter
My question...are the original razor stamps and engravings intended to be a black inset? Or is it just black from the years of grime and gunk that have built up?
I ask because ive seen some videos of folks doing the vinegar bath to give the stamps/insets a black background (not sure what the technique is called). I think it looks nice for contrast especially when the razor is all polished up. But doubt it's a factory feature for restoring back to OEM.
I assume when they stamp the steel it's just a die and isn't followed by any black paint or additional steps...other than the gold etchings.
The pic is a recent ebay purchase. Notice how the tang stamps are blackened.
Thoughts/ input from the more experienced folks is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
