Tale of a Christmas Brush

For the past several years my mom's always given me a tube of KMF cream for christmas. Unenlightened shaver that I was, I'd slather it on with my palms and spend the next fortnight rinsing my hands off so I could hold a razor (or what I considered a razor at the time:blush:). It made for a tedious experience and I'd occasionally catch myself thinking, "I wish she'd stop giving me this stuff." Rather than be ungrateful, I got to thinking of a solution: "A brush," I thought, "next year I'll ask for a brush for Christmas!" And so I did.

My first brush, a Kent VS60

And so it began. It wasn't long before I came across a wealth of information and a community of like-minded gentlemen seeking an exceptional shave. I'd already sworn off high-priced cartridges out of spite, and was using Bic disposables, so I was READY to find an alternative. In my excitement, I bought another brush, and another... Twelve months later, the VS60 has seen very little action. It's looked on as I accumulated a small number of badger brushes and a Semogue boar.

I'll be visiting my folks again this Christmas and I wouldn't feel right about using a different brush while I'm there. I decided to give it a spin with today's shave and see how it measures up to the brushes I've grown accustomed to. Surprisingly well! It is alarmingly un-dense, but whips up a nice lather rather like my Semogue. Certainly, it doesn't feel as nice in your hand, but it does get the job done. It was nice to see that such an inexpensive brush can perform, and it reminded me how I discovered this excellent hobby.
