Taking Pictures?

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

How does everyone get such nice pictures of their razors? Has anyone written down any notes? All I have is my iPhone but it's been able to take reasonably good pics of other things. A razor pic that is even clear is so far outside my grasp.

Something like this. http://www.wikihow.com/Create-an-Inexpensive-Photography-Lightbox

A tripod helps a lot too.

I use a cheapo Kodak with a tripod and a homemade light box. Otherwise I can't get auto-focus to work. Also- use macro mode if you have it!!
Usually I try to put something in the frame with color to avoid getting bad color balance or weird tints. When you only have a silver colored razor to take a picture of it can come out gold colored or washed out if there isn't something else in frame for reference.

Sometimes I have to take a dozen pictures though to get one in focus and crisp.

Here's what my pictures come out like.

Greetings LBussy.
There is a section called The Dark Room that I'm sure you can find answers.
That's how it all starts.

First you guys rope me in with "this is cheaper than cartridges!" and next thing you know I am buying Iridiums and waiting for a BST Pils to arrive. Next you want me to go in another forum where someone is going to convince me I need a $500 camera to take a picture of my $200 razor .... al so I can avoid paying for $30 cartridges! :)

Haha..funny but true...at least your spending your money on better things than cartridges:biggrin1:

Most of todays cameras are good enough to take good razor shots. Decent software helps for cropping and touching up pics.
As with any photography, it all depends on the lighting

I would not call my photos anything more than a simple record of what I used to shave with that day. Nothing special. No special lighting (natural light) and the counter of my bathroom sink as the backdrop (blue tile with the fish border).

Now there are some REAL photographers on B&B and their work is more art than a simple snapshot like I take.

I use a simple point and shoot Panasonic Lumix camera (just a pocket camera). It does have a nice piece of glass on it (Leica lens)

This is where my bathroom pics are taken and that large window in the cathedral ceiling does point to the north which gives decent lighting but the walls, ceiling, and tile are all blue which is why all of my pics have a blue tinge to them.

For the pics that appear to be on carpet or a white background I have a Polaroid copy camera in my basement and I turn on the 4 lights and use the same point and shoot camera for those pics. Pics taken there seem to be better as the lighting is better.

Basement pics are taken on the this copy camera. I use just using the lights not the camera part. I have the 4x5 head off and attach the point and shoot to the threaded stud on the column

I notice you have not actually said no.......:biggrin1:

Yes and that's exactly my problem.

I often have a need to take a pic of a small part or device actually, so maybe building a small knock-down whitebox will be useful for me. I suspect no matter what I do, the auto-focus of my phone will be challenging but I'm going to live with it.

The only thing keeping be from a good thrashing from my wife right now is she's out of town. :)

Well you asked..............we can always send you to another place where you can ger ripped off.:scared:

The light-box with help, but your pictures will be limited to how good your camera and lens are. It really depends on how good of a quality you want the pictures to be. i started off with a cheap digital Canon camera, bought a used Nikon D3000 with the standard lens and the picture quality improved dramatically, but once i got a used Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 35mm lens, that is where the photos have gone to another level of quality. Good luck.

I have a friend with that camera (and maybe that's my answer). I never really enjoyed photography enough to buy a good camera. Since I can take every picture I want to take (except close-ups of metal object apparently) with a phone, I'll just have to remain ignorant because (here it comes!) I will never pay that much for a camera. Yep said, it. Never. :biggrin1:

When I did have a camera it was never around when I wanted a pic. Now I am content to do things that are often caught on camera and I enjoy the pics other people take. :001_tt2:

You can get fairly inexpensive cameras that take great close ups...just make sure it has a macro or better yet a super macro setting

I did a little searching and I found that an iPhone has auto exposure and auto focus lock. Not earth-shattering but it might help. It will definitely help with my fireworks.
