Taking apart razors before platting

I apologize ahead of time since there is already a thread on this I am willing to bet. I cannot find it however. Does anyone ever take the twist to open razors of any brand apart before they re finish it at say a platting shop. A platter I spoke with today stated he was afraid to dip them unless they were apart for fear of gumming up the workings with his soloutions. I do not believe this to be an easy task, even a reccomended one in my opinion. Can anyone help me on this.

For most of them, it is not really as hard as it looks, but it does carry with it the risk of irreversible damage. Any US made Gillette with a slotted screw inside (and some British versions) can be unscrewed and disassembled. Later versions have a ring and I'm not aware of an easy removal for those.
Most Gillette TTO adjustables can also be disassembled easily, and those which cannot be shouldn't be anyways, as their collectible value is greater.

Given the experiences I've had with four different folks/companies that supposedly do razor restoration, I give up trying to fix any of my damaged or worn TTO's. The only razor I would even try to have someone replate would be a 3-piece, like the Tech. Even then I wouldn't know who to send it to.

Good luck,

Clay

The tolerances are large enough and plating thin enough that TTO razors can be safely replated without disassembly. There are several posts in this forum from professional platers who plate TTO razors fully assembled. Search through posts by buddydog, onotoman and cooncatbob and you will find mention somewhere in there. It's a lot less problematic than taking a TTO apart.

Edit: One of the professionals got there before me ^.

I did have some fear of getting involved in taking them apart. I will try one without taking it apart first to see if my guy is able to do it. Thanks for your help.
