Tailored dress shirt recommendation

Hey!

I just ruined my last Swedish dress shirt and need to find something I like as much here in California. Since I've never navigated the dress shirt jungle here before I would love some recommendations.

I'm looking for a tailored dress shirt that would fit someone fairly small but with an athletic build (5'6" and 140 lbs). I think that I would be ok to spend up to around $50 but may go higher if they are great quality/fit.

Help ... please :tongue_sm

I have had good luck with mytailor.com. Bought several custom shirts from them and each one has been a right on the money fit and excellent value for the money.

Thanks! They all look interesting!

I just realized that I might also have used the wrong term for the shirt. I'm a bit confused by the different fits here :001_smile

What I meant to say was a shirt with a tailored fit (fitted shirt?), not necessarily fitted for me by a tailor.

Check Thomas Pink on the internet as well. I have bought their shirts for years and have never been disappointed.

for that price, you might as well get it fitted by a reputable tailor:thumbup1:

i meant getting it bespoke and not altering an off the rack shirt.

+1 on the tailor. Better to spend $20 on a shirt that is close and $15 on a tailor to make it fit perfectly than to spend $35 on a higher quality shirt that doesn't fit perfectly. It makes a huge difference in both look and feel.

I really like Brooks Brothers slim fit dress shirts, unfortunately they're limited when it comes to different styles. I've bought several Thomas Pink shirts but I have to have the sleeves shortened, which is another $20. Charles Twyrhitt shirts are good for the price but I find their slim fit shirts arm holes lower than the Brooks Brothers shirts. I found a site via GQ that will make shirts using the dimensions of your favorite dress shirt. I measured my favorite Brooks Brothers slim fit dress shirt and using these measurements, I was able to make a wider variety of dress shirts in different styles and materials. The site is Proper Cloth.

I'm a fan of Charles Tyrewhitt. But I like their Sea Island cotton which is about $110. Well worth it in my view. I have a lot of much pricier shirts that don't use as nice a cotton as these. Quality you can see and feel. Their Sea Island line is mostly restricted to fairly conventional solids. But there are some variations.

I have not tried their shirts that retail around $50-$60. Others here may have some experience with those.

I will say I have a Harvie and Hudson shirt that was about $75 and I like it a lot more than Brooks Brothers shirts that are more like $90 or so.

If you're choosy about fit, the online retailers are tricky. The fit is major YMMV. It's a two week or more wait before you'll know how the fit is. They are very accommodating with returns in my experience. But it takes quite awhile.

This is why I like Proper Cloth, they use the dimensions from you favorite shirt to make a fitted shirt in the material that you choose. You create your own account where your measurements are saved so you can order shirts anytime you wish. You can also order material swatches to if you unsure of the quality, thread count, etc. Of course, prices vary, depending on the quality of the material.

Thanks! It would be really fun to try sometime. We'll see if I can squeeze it into the budget anytime soon :wink2:

I've bought several Thomas Pink shirts but I have to have the sleeves shortened, which is another $20.

Every Thomas Pink shirt I've purchased also needed the sleeves shortened, but the store always shortened them for me for free and then shipped the shirt to me for free.

Really...I'll have to check into that. I bought mine on-line so I'll check the store next time. Thanks for the info.

+1 on MyTailor.com! I've purchased several shirts from them, and they are very nice to work with. Very affordable, and high quality. I will definitely be going to them for all my future dress shirts.

Wanting for wisdom
I'm trying out ShirtPal based on an article in the Glob and Mail (Canadian National Newspaper). I received the sample shirt a week ago. Fit was wonderful (based on my measurements) wonderful quality stitching and construction on the collar and cuffs and generous length for tucking in. The darted the back for a perfect taper to fit me. Being a bigger guy I've had nothing but a non-tapered shirt for a long time. The taper adds something fit wise that just makes it look better.

I'm waiting for another five shirts. All in pinpoint and oxford. I'm hoping they wear well.
