tabac smell

I generally let my soap dry between uses
and tabac, the first few days the smell was a bit strong...but the air dry seems to have taken out all the smell.
now it has no smell..just creamy soap...

it never smelled unbearable for me and it performed so well, I just kept at it.

anyone else that had an issue with tabac.. did you try air drying it between uses? or did you give up after one use?

just curious..

and my tabac seems to be getting bigger the more i use it ..propably due to absorbing some water.
are there any known issues with storing it ? my cella is feeling unwanted
I should really pay it some attention.

I have noticed that as well, every now and again I just press it down with my thumbs before using it.

If you try and soak the puck or something silly like that then water can get underneath and swell it.

this is not in the dish
..this is just a refill i put in a metal tin with a clear top..
I am positive there is nothing underneath..and i only put a few drops on top ..
pretty sure its water that is actually absorbed into the soap....

but are there any known issues with storing it unsued for weeks or months?

When I first unwrapped my puck of Tabac, the scent was so strong, you could smell it throughout the bathroom. It quickly calms down into a not unpleasant powdery scent. Great stuff, very effective.
I've set aside my puck covered, still wet, while I used up a stick of Arko. I don't think pucks of soap go bad from storage, even wet. Mine hasn't and it's been weeks now.

No issues storing it for me. My bowl is over 2 years old. It has lost a lot of its scent but still lathers great. Sometimes I leave it uncovered for an hour after use but most of the time I just cap it and put it back in the drawer. While I cover my soaps with water before using, I load the brush with the bowls held almost upside down and haven't had issues with water collecting under the pucks.

I keep my soap refill pucks in open top mugs after their first use. Tabac stands up very well over weeks of mug storage and does not appear to shrink and crack like mwf. Tabac scent fades a bit over the time spent in the mug, but it always seems to be more pronounced than mwf. A puck of Tabac lasts me a very long time. I pre-soak Tabac but Tabac lathers easily and does not really require the pre-soak during showering that helps make mwf easy to lather. The only soaps that I have found to be easier to lather than Tabac are Italian soft soaps such as ProRaso and Cella, but there are dozens of soaps that I have not had an opportunity to try.

Tabac smells like dirty socks that have been sitting in a laundry basket, in the hallway of a couple of 2 Pack a day smokers house. Other than that its a great lather and very protective too.

thats what they say and hence why i started this thread..

wheres my dirty socks at? who took my tabac smell...

its smelly but i dont find it to bad. havent lathered or shaved with it yet (trying out the RR artisians) but it doesnt really seem as bad as some make it out to be IMHO. again, with everything here YMMV

I got a sample of Tabac from Garry and absolutely despised the scent. I left it sitting uncovered in a glass bowl for months. Then one day I picked it up and the scent had faded quite a bit so I think it is likely that it could happen. I then gave it another try. This is unquestionably a great soap and I now understand why it has a devoted following.

I also love the scent of Tabac, didn't find any tobacco notes, but I don't think I have a very refined nose. Just a manly spice-herbs scent. The women at my house despise most things that smells "manly", but didn't reject Tabac. The smells has been fading for me too, I just wipe with my wet finger all traces of lather from the soap and bowl and leave it covered until next use.

I've noticed the swelling issue too... I wonder if that's why the glass Tabac container comes with a lid that doesn't actually attach/screw on? I just press the lid down firmly after every use to keep it tamped down; issue self resolves after a month or two of a new puck. Tabac is the soap I use 9 days out of 10 for the last 2 years. Perfect performance.

I would say the Tabac scent is unusual. Hard to describe, but I think it has some lavender in it. When you first peel the foil off the new puck, its pretty strong, but it mellows over time.

Though you may not like the odor of Tabac

Dirty gym socks, cigarette butts in the back
You may not dig the scent at all
But just remember, fellow wetshavers
You can still shave tall

Just be thankful for what it's got
Though you may not like the odor of Tabac
Lather's in the bag, glide don't stop
Diggin' the scene while you're shavin clean
Monster lather, let it air out in the back
You may not dig the scent at all
But just remember, fellow wetshavers
You can still shave tall....

I just received an order from IB and it contained my first bowl of Tabac. I find the scent quite acceptable and swmbo thinks it smells very nice, passed the stink test!

I'm looking forward to trying it this week since I've read so many good reports regarding it's performance.

Just a footnote, the scent of Tabac is heavenly compared to the old Proraso Green Cream or Soap. That stuff smells like industrial disinfectant! Great soap but it STINKS! Fortunately the performanceof the white is outstanding and I really like the scent. I'll always have Proraso White in the shave cabinet. The new formula smells just as good as the old, now I'll have to see how it performs.

Just picked up my first puck of tabac. I was worried when I picked it up because I could smell it through the box. Once I opened it the scent aired out and in small doses was quite pleasant. Lather was amazing. Also recieved and used a new razor today but by far my closest shave yet.
