T&H Sandalwood vs TOBS Sandalwood

I must say that in my nose that the sandalwood scent in T&H sandalwood is quite different than the TOBS sandalwood. The TOBS have a very strong and dominant smell while T&H is the complete opposite, but they smell very different. Is there a standard sandalwood scent or does everybody have a different take on the scent?

If they all smelled the same, you wouldn't have to try them all. I've used ToBS, Trumpers, Vintage Blades, AoS and Castle Forbes Sandalwoods. For scent I like AoS, ToBS, Vintage Blades in that order. For performance it's CF, with VB and ToBS in a tie for second. My individual preferences of course. I haven't gotten to the T&H creams yet.

there are many different species of plants from different regions of the world that are used to produce the essential oil known as sandalwood- which might be one explanation for differences in scent. one other explanation would be that rather than using essential oil (sandalwood essential is very expensive, i understand) some companies may use frangrance oils made by different manufacturers, with different scents. and then there is the issue of concentration of the oil used in the product.

I haven't yet tried TOBS or T&H Sandalwood, but my favourite Sandalwood products are D.R. Harris' Sandalwood After Shave and Green Pond Sandalwood Shaving Cream. The cream is made by Harris but packaged and marketed by Green Pond- the scents match and they are wonderful!

Sssshhhh!! A sneak preview of my Shave Of The Day photo for tomorrow

LOL! You are quite right, I was expecting that they would smell pretty much the same, except that T&H don’t smell that intense as TOBS, and that the only real difference was in how they performed. But I was wrong there! Will have some more sandalwood creams on the way soon.

I have the Queen Charlotte Soaps Sandalwood and I find it pleasing and a somewhat heavy scent but not overbearing. I like a rich scent though.

ToBS definitely has the strongest scent. It's more cologne-like. AoS and CF are more wood-like. All the VB creams are more lightly scented than I prefer, but they've been in my rotation since I started and they do well for me. Can't remember the scent of Trumpers, but I expected it to be stronger, and a better cream. A full tub may smell better than the samples I had.

Trumper's Sandalwood was a great disappointment to me. Great quality cream, but the scent was ashy and very subdued.

I presently have Salter's Indian Sandalwood and at first I liked it but now I'm not so sure. It also doesn't seem to lather well at all (or I haven't hit the sweet spot on it). The scent is very reminiscent of incense and heavy spice and I think it might be irritating my face.

AoS Sandalwood is GLORIOUS! I have a brand new tub at home waiting for me!
