Swedish G Alternative

I've been using a DE for almost a year now and settled on the Swedish G's as my go to blade. Although these are now discontinued, I did have the presence of mind to buy up all the stock in a local pharmacy as soon as I heard about it. I now have 10 packs (50 blades) left, but I'm already looking ahead to an alternative blade.

I'm currently trying out the Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (Yellow Pack) which I've found to give a close and comfortable shave very similar to the Swedes. Someone suggested I try Permasharp blades. Anyone out there have any experience of these? There are only a couple of reviews on B&B and I like to garner some opinion before I go off and buy some.

I've always wanted to try the Swedes but obviously they're not so easy to get.

Would you consider an across the pond trade of say, one 10 pack of Swedes for a 10 pack of Feathers?

I was unfortunate enough to use a Swede in my return to wet shaving 3 years ago. It was a great reintroduction. These blades were more widely available then and I have somewhere over 100 left. Because they have always been more expensive, AFAIK, than any other blade, I've tried many different blades to get a lower cost alternative. The Sharpedge and Permasharp blades are quite good, as are the Astra Superiors and Red Pack Personnas, but IMO the Swede stands by itself for its combination of sharpness, smoothness and longevity.

I've recently tried Bluebirds, have some Sharks and Lord Platinums inbound, and plan to try some Iridiums. The search continues.

Good luck,

jim

I haven't tried the yellow Gillette 7 O'Clocks, but I found the Iridium Super blades a worthy replacement for the "Swedes".

There are Gillette 7 O'Clock Permasharp Stainless. Green pack, made in India. These are a different brand than the other green pack 7 O'Clocks that say Super Stainless and made in Russia. The 7 O'Clock Permasharps are good blades, but not quite as good as the SharpEdge or Iridiums.

There is another Perma-sharp, the Perma-sharp Super. These are available from www.melyus.com. According to melyus, they are made in Russia and sold to the Turkish market. I use these as well and I find them slightly smoother than the Iridiums and SharpEdges. I would give these a try.

In the extensive and intensive discussion over the past year, both here and and shave my face, on the demise of this blade, the two blades that have come to the surface as replacements are the Super Iridium and the Crystal. This from one of the most diehard "Swede" fans over at SMF, plus many others.

I remain convinced that there are as yet undiscovered pallettes of Swedes in various warehouses scattered thoughout the EU. That being said, the afore mentioned threads both here and on SMF are some of the most entertaining discussions I have ever read. I do take them seriously as I am a huge fan of these blades and, like jpkunst and several others, I managed to make a heavy investment in the remaining supply once I heard that they would soon disappear. It is the greatest tribute to the Gillette "Swedes" that I believe most of them will be used for shaving, and not get "flipped" on eBay.
The only replacement I can conceive of using would be NOS Gillette Bleue Extras.

And not just Swedes, but many other NOS blades as well both in the EU and the States. I picked up a nice quantity of Schick Plus Platinums from a guy who found them in some random warehouse. By nice quantity I mean 400.

The blades are out there, I'm certain.

Iridiums are working out pretty good for me, still they are not Swedes but no damage has been done to my face using them, so I will flip between Iridiums & Feathers for now.

Good luck
