Suspicious activity!!!

Last night at about 5:00 pm, Central Time, a member posted a for sale thread in the BST.
The item being sold was claimed to be a Wolfman WR2 1.05 SB with hollow WRH2 handle and WRA1 stand.
It was being offered for a very reasonable price of $300.00 US.

Fortunately the thread was reported by several sharp eyed members who noted that the seller had:
1. Offered an expensive item for a great price.
2. Failed to include pictures with his name and date in the photo.
3. Requested payment by PayPal Friends and Family or Zelle only.

A quick check revealed that the members account had apparently been hacked and the thread was the work of a scammer.
The photos and the write up on this for sale thread was a word for word copy of a sale that was actually posted here at B&B several months ago. The scammer just copied the text of the for sale post and the photos, leaving out the photo with identifying marks.
The thread was pulled and the members account password was reset.

This is a very timely reminder of why we demand that a photo with your user name and date be included in photos for all BST threads.
It's also a reminder that we all must remain diligent about password security, changing passwords frequently and maintaining a watch on our online accounts.

We wish to thank the sharp eyed members who called this thread to our attention by reporting it. The Mod Team can't be everywhere, and there is simply no way that we can eyeball every single post that is sent up to the B&B servers.
We rely on our ever vigilant members to let us know if they see suspicious activity, or posts that violate our guidelines.

The guidelines seem endless I know, but they are in place for good reason. Familiarize yourself with our BST Guidelines and our site Terms Of Use, and let us know if there are posts out there that don't belong!

It appears that we have a number of very wise individuals on the forum... not a surprise to me at all.

Any time a deal seems to good to be true, it probably is a scam.

As P T Barnum is reported to have said "There's a sucker born every minute". Make sure you are not one of them.

And don't forget about the two-step verification option in your password and security settings. It's another step in the login process and can be considered inconvenient, but it's one more hurdle for the hackers and scammers to overcome. Remember, they're generally lazy and prefer the low-hanging fruit.

Thank you for the heads up. I just changed my pw and configured 2 factor authentication. You should make this a sticky so folks can understand the potential harm a compromised account can do.

Changing passwords is a good idea, but so the length/complexity of the password itself. With permission, I'll put in a plug for a password management app called 1Password. It generates random passwords based on your desired length of characters, symbols, and numbers, and works seamlessly on mobile devices and computers. Of course, nothing beats a two factor authentication.
