What's new

Suspicious about Apple

I am a huge Apple fan. I have a pair of desktops, a pair of laptops and numerous Ipods. I dont have an Iphone though. I am also a share holder.

Anyhow, my Ipod classic just died. I have also noticed that my primary use desktop is getting a bit glitchy. I found myself ordering my new Ipod and my new Snow Leopard update yesterday and recalled a series of Apple updates downloaded over the past 7-10 days.

Soooooo...the paranoic in me wonders whether Apple throws the "die" switch , which they build into their software, when they send down these "updates."
The rational thinker in me says "nah...its just a coincidence with the Ipod, it is 4 years old and I have been cycling with it in the rain this month (even though I have been doing this with it for its whole life), and my OS is getting glitchy from due to third party vendor software."

Hmmm, I wonder which is more likely?

All i can say is whatever the case - us Mac Fans are in a better position that M$ fans... Uncle Bill kicks them in the noots all the time ;)

But in reality your just paranoid... ;)

how?
I am perfectly happy with my windows based comps.
I find apple fashinable, but way too expensive for the same capabilities as any PC.

probably batteries in the classic (that can be replaced) and coincidence otherwise

but just because we're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get us

I would rather go through this than half the crap Windows users go through.

Does the iPod Classic have a hard drive or flash memory? I went through two iPod Videos because the harddrive kept breaking.

Hard drive...and its what went. I am pretty handy with them and have fixed a few over the years. This one is a bad drive, I think with some physically bad sectors, after restoring it it would sync and load about 1/3 of the way through my library and then crash at the same spot every time. I took it apart and reseated the ribbon cables and the problem was still the same. It has been used hard and pretty much used up, I don't feel I didn't get my money out of this Ipod.

er, no. iPods have a limited lifespan, 4 years is a good run.

As far as the mac, do a fresh install, and your issues will most likely magically disappear. I used to reimage mine every 6 months or so (I kept multiple images and used CCC) which worked pretty well. Reimages/reainstalls are still pretty much a snap on the Mac.

As a Mac user, I'm more irritated by the fact that mac hardware is behind the curve when compared to PC's (I run both). Of course, when you consider having to run Vista, the balance tips to Apple's favor.:lol:

The "die" switch must be a recent development. My 1997 PowerMac 7300 is running great, as is my 2000 G4 Dual 500 and 2005 iMac G5. The Intel iMac I'm typing this on could explode at any moment though. If you don't hear from me again you'll know what happened.

One of my colleagues has a MacBook and the hard drive went out after a year. The same day, my daughter had her one year old MacBook suffer exactly the same fatal crash. Maybe the signal did go out!

I've never understood this attitude. I've had my own Windows-based PC's for 9 years now. If you count hardware upgrades, you could say that I've owned 3 PC's in that time. And in these 9 years,

I have never had a virus.

My computer has never crashed except when I've played a buggy game.

I've never lost any documents, files, important data like the Mac commercials say happens to poor PC users on a regular basis.

For the setups I've run, all 3 of my PC systems combined have cost less than a single comparable Mac system.

Really, I don't get it. Macs just appeal to different tastes and Apple stuff looks slick and cool. Nothing I've ever seen nor any claims I've heard convinces me that they're "better."

Trust me, I bought into the hype and the cool looking monitor when I bought my Mac. Nothing about it was "better" than a PC, IMO. Windows Vista is the single best OS I've ever run, and I have no idea why everyone disses it so contemptuously.

Macs look cooler in movies. That's the only edge I think they have over PCs.

no one "has" to run Vista, XP is still viable, and Windows 7 ROCKS!

I am a "fanboy" of neither OS/company, both have their strong and weak points.

Apple's is in their hip image. Even though there are many personal media players much better than the Ipod, it's more trendy.
Apple's products have fewer perceived problems because pretty much all hardware is made to spec by Apple, as well as software. Very small selection of vendors otherwise. Again, nothing wrong with it, it works for them, it's just the way it is.
MS on the other hand is everywhere, and there are many more 3rd party vendors for their software, not as tight a ship as Apple runs and more probability of problems.

Not knocking Apple at all, I've had opportunity to play with some new Macs last year, they are very nice. But for most folks, their price doesn't justify their performance.
Old marketing adage: The more you pay for something, the less likely you are to have negative feelings for it.
Applies to automobiles as well.

Again, just my observations. Didn't mean to mini-rant.

But Windows 7 does rock, very much. There will be a new tune sung in October. It won't switch everyone, but those that do will be very pleased.

Oh, and Linux.

As to the OP, probably just coincidental timing, but sometimes I do wonder about such odd timing when it comes to technology, of any kind

As long as you have the hardware to run it, that is.

I'm running win2K on one box right now, and will be upgrading to XP once I upgrade the processor. At some point I'll build a win7 box and repurpose this one. Honestly, don't take my comments as anti MS, I have used 6.22, 3.11, 95, 98, NT 3.51, 2000, XP, and Vista. But never Bob. By far, Vista was the worst, especially in a networked environment.

And while I am happy with my Mac, it really bugs me that you pay a premium for hardware. Slow hardware. Minor rant, as I can build a box that will go as fast as I want, it will just have to run XP. Which is not a bad thing, as I have never had virus/bot issues like so many others have.
Windows Vista is the single best OS I've ever run, and I have no idea why everyone disses it so contemptuously.
They do not play well in a networked environment, for starters. Good home platform tho.

That really is sad, for Microsoft. That would be like a major car company saying "Our 2009 models are buggy, but our 2003 models are still good options".

Not really. It is more like "Why buy a 2009 model car when my 2003 model car works just fine".

I don't know about Apple, but I feel the same way about Gap Kids. It just seems that every few months, the hidden, "get smaller" switch gets thrown, and the clothes don't fit any more. It's like they want to force us to keep buying more clothes as the kids get older.
