What's new

Suspenders.

So, this October I have to attend a freinds wedding, and it's a Great Gatsby theme. I HAVE to wear all black. It's going to be outside, so I'm not going to be wearing a jacket/blazer. Anyway, I was going to invest in some suspenders for it.

I wont need them for support, but merely a fashion statement so I don't look as bland in just all black. I was thinking skinny, black, leather with the button hooks, but I'm not 100% on it yet.

What are yalls outlook on the skinny vs think suspenders? Leather vs elastic? Button hook vs Clamp type? V vs X? V hook vs D hook? ect...

A little poofier than I prefer
I'm not sure why you wouldn't wear a jacket to a Gatsby themed wedding as men generally always wore jackets in the 20's and if its in October, it'll be plenty chilly outside. But anyway, nevermind, suspenders. I don't think I've ever seen leather suspenders. Leather parts, sure, but not the whole thing. Suspenders need to be stretchy in order to work. If they aren't, than they'll be too tight or too loose as you stand and sit. And black leather suspenders certainly wouldn't look very vintage; they'd look more 90's Euro-trash. But, whatever. Here's my advice for you: First, yes you definitely want buttons, not clips. I've used both and buttons both look better and won't chew up your pants. Plus, buttons are more period-correct, if you are really going for a 20's-era look. Most tailors will sew buttons into pants for a reasonable fee. Second, THE best places to find suspenders on the cheap are thrift stores. Thirdly, if you want to draw attention to the suspenders, maybe instead of all-black suspenders, look for a set that has stripes or dots or something that will pop off the rest of your monochromatic outfit. Anyway, sounds like a fun party. Best of luck to you.

I wear braces aka suspenders all the time - initially because it was more comfortable than a belt before and especially after hip replacement surgery, but I got used to them and preferred them.
I tried clip on ones, but found that they had a tendency to slip off.
Now I wear button on ones - they cost around €5 on eBay, although it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive from China.
I sewed buttons inside the waistbands of all my jeans, a bit time consuming, but sat in front of the TV with a can of beer made it less of a chore.

I'd recommend elastic ones instead of all leather - IMHO the all leather ones look a bit camp or girly
A 3rd, albeit expensive option could be silk ones as worn with a Tuxedo to a Black Tie event- any good outfitter who sells or hires out formal wear should stock them.
Daniel Craig looked ultra cool, and even more badass than normal in the white silk suspenders he wore in Casino Royale, black ones will no doubt look just as good

Thanks for your input. Yeah as far as the leather - I was just thinking on the spot when I wrote it. I may bring a jacket, but October in GA can go 1 or 2 ways (quite hot, or pretty chilly). Either way - I will def keep yours thoughts when looking for some suspenders. The bride showed me my bow tie last night which will be all black but with paisley print.

I didn't even think about silk, but I'll keep an eye out for some. I may just get a few, and see what goes best.

I have multiple pairs of braces. Suggest you obtain a classic pair and have your tailor attach proper buttons to your trousers.

You do not want anything which will take attention away from the wedding couple.

I admit it...I (now), love wearing suspenders (blk, 1in wide, elastic, blk leather ends for buttons [6] and classic Y-back design...purchased at my local military Clothing and Sales), with my slacks, suits (for these articles...had to visit the tailor for suspender buttons), and of course tuxedo pants.

I wear suspenders also. The button in suspenders are the only way to go. As said above any tailor, including those found at about any dry cleaners, will sew those buttons in for you. I have found black silk suspenders online for as little as $29.

I wear suspenders a lot with jeans and casual slacks, usually under a polo shirt or similar.

Am I the only one who finds buttons on the inside of trouser waist bands for suspenders to tend to fold over the waist band? For that reason and others I do not often wear suspenders with suits/dress slacks. I do like the feel.

I enjoy wearing suspenders (mostly button). I did find the same issue with buttons on the inside. I have managed to avoid that now by changing the way I sew on the button.

Use the leather tab of the suspender to help create a "space" for it. The other way is to have a double thickness "Tab" of cloth, attached to the trouser along the bottom. The button (and suspenders are attached to the tab.

Do you suppose you could give us a visual of that? (Preferably 8x10 glossy color photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one.)
