Suspenders

I bought a pair of tweed dress pants from the The J.Peterman store that are modeled on late 19th century style. They are meant to be worn with suspenders but the buttons are sewn on the outside. Should I replace the buttons? What is the right way to attach suspenders? Buttons inside or outside?

Buttons were originally on the outside and were covered up by the vest that every man wore. Only after men stopped wearing vests (WWI-ish) people started to put the buttons on the outside. I would leave them on the outside as the stop the waistband from rolling over.

Thanks!

The bigger problem is .. those aren't pants, they're shorts, and badly in need of getting hemmed.

Suspenders? Braces, please!!! On my dress slacks I have the flat buttons on the inside - conventional nowdays. For my jeans, I use the "tack-on" studs and have them on the outside - as per yore. One real good reason is the tack-ons would do a number on my waist if they were on the inside!

While on formal wear the buttons are on the inside (at least now), the cumberbund was used to cover buttons that were originally on the outside.
