What's going on here?

I think they are switching to online sales only.

Sorry, you’re too late. Do patronize your own local specialist retail options in life because when they’re gone, they’re gone! We all know who’s killing this kinds of business model, and they don’t have anything specific to do with German straight razors beyond ruining the market for them with their leverage.

From the web site, it looks like Jarrod has closed his brick and mortar storefront. I think you can still order online, but I have not ordered from him recently, so I do not know.

He blames big Internet sites for driving local shops out of business. I must admit that there is some truth to that. However, there are also competitors who maintaine a much broader inventory than he did at his shop. Jarrod focused on just a few key suppliers.

I have purchased a lot of shaving soaps, including a couple of new ones ordered just yesterday. The Superior Shave offers just 46 different soaps from 18 suppliers. One of his larger competitors with a brick and mortar shop offers 957 soaps and creams from 84 different suppliers. Thus, if I am looking for a new soap, it is unlikely that I will purchase it from The Superior Shave.

There are some things that Jarrod carried that are hard to find elsewhere. I purchased a Jerry Stark custom straight razor. I also purchased a VP Leonhardy premium silvertip badger brush that is one of my favorite brushes.

I have to admit that I agree with his sentiment. I try and buy from local suppliers and retailers as much as possible. I also admit that I am privileged to have that option; living in a big city and having the means to do so. I am also the type that likes to settle on a set of preferred products and don't go looking for variety once I am happy with my setup.

I wholeheartedly agree. Those of us who are involved with wet shaving as a hobby as well as grooming need to support merchants dedicated to serving OUR needs. Those super size online stores that sell virtually everything only sell cheaply without service nor expertise.
I too am in a major urban area fortunate to have a brick and mortar store dedicated to men’s grooming needs and the like. I like browsing there and I support them whenever possible.
I hope we don’t lose anymore purveyors of Wet Shaving gear.

Ask me about shaving naked!
You need to look at the ‘fine print’.

He offers absolutely no after the sale service or support; click the ‘buy’ button and if you have a problem you’re on you’re way to Dovo or Simpsons. He actually says that somewhere.

Well all considered, it's a shame things did not seem to go the way Jarrod would have liked. I had nothing but good experiences with The Superior Shave.

it'd be nice if he maintains a profitable online storefront. his overhead with the brick and mortar was a concern of his (I stopped in once when I was on the road).

that said, the delivery style of his opinions struck me as often confrontational, and... dogmatically superior at times in his videos and various forum/facebook posts/rebuttals. that may not have won him more fans or customers.

So sorry to see this.... but one thing I can say is if I lived over there I would take my business to Jarrod without a doubt, as he knew what he was talking about and would not sell you a something that was not right for you. He got to know you more than you can say for the online stores, I have delt with him from here in the UK and you could not wish for a better person.....

This statement is untrue.

Shops come and go. Some last longer than other. The style of both the shops and the owners differs. I don't like all shops nor their owners, but there's always another shop I can do business with. Live and let live I say. Life's too short anyway.:001_smile

I have read it. Your statement that he offers no after the sale service or support remains untrue. I have personally dealt with him and he has always been helpful. He words it the way he does to protect himself against the ignorant and the liars of the world. He is also the middle man between you and the manufacturer he doesn't just tell you to contact Dovo. The business is his and his alone, if you are reasonable and polite he will be too. If you are unreasonable and rude then he will not be as apt to work with you and that is his prerogative. Either way if you have a problem contact him and he will help you.

I’m confused, lol. I’m not saying what I think you think that I did. That he doesn’t honor his TOS, IMO he does, but If I get a bad ‘thingy’ that’s intended to touch my skin, I can return it on eBay, Etsy, or Amazon, not at TSS per the cited terms. This is clear from the TOS. Isn’t it?

I disagree with the rest of your post, but let us agree to disagree and let it go.

You stated "He offers absolutely no after the sale service or support." He does provide many after the sale services and support even with personal items. Saying he provides none is untrue as I originally stated. It was however smart to only list ebay, Amazon, and Etsy for arguments sake because his return policies are the same as pretty much every other small shaving supplies retail operation including Fendrihan, Maggard, West Coast Shaving, The Italian Barber, Merchant and Rhodes, Classic Shaving, Royal Shave to name a few. Cheers!

The Superior Shave brick and mortar shop was located in Jacksonville FL. It is the most populous city in Florida. However, the metropolitan area has only 1.5 million people, making it the 40th largest metropolitan area in the USA. It pales in comparison to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Houston, and Miami, Atlanta, and Detroit, all of which have over 5 million people. Thus, for someone trying to sell specialty products to a niche market, Jacksonville is not the ideal location to do so.

Paying rent on a storefront and staffing the store during normal operating hours is expensive. Local stores that sell items of interest to a mass market can generate enough customer traffic to survive. Specialty stores that cater to a smaller segment of the population seem to do better online.

I do wish Jarrod and his family well as they explore this new phase of their business plan.

Agreed on all counts. I would add that there would have even been better places in Jacksonville than where he was located. There was no other shopping where he was other than Publix and no chance for foot traffic.
