Summer clothes

I started my style revolution in the fall/winter time, so I think I have a handle on layering sweaters with dress shirts and blazers/sportcoats and so on. But down here in the south it will be summer temps in just a few more months. What do I need to start looking for in warm weather clothes? I have a navy hopsack blazer that breathes really well. But is it acceptable to wear a long sleeve t-shirt over a dress shirt like you would a sweater in the winter? I'm know this sounds like a silly post, but all I really know what to wear in spring/summer are cargo shorts/flip flops/polo shirts.

Of course I'm looking for timeless/traditional styles, not current fashion or trends.

Thanks for your patience with my learning!

I'd say no on the long sleeved t-shirt over a dress shirt. A button down and khaki's would be dressy enough with a blazer.

I did my style revolution last year with my wardrobe except it was in the summer time.

Got some nice solid color t-shirts and flat front shorts ( no cargo's ), threw in some polo's and I was good to go.

Oh, and had to have boat shoes, sans socks of course.

A T-shirt is a short sleeve under garment....A long sleeve (sleeve to wrist)?
As you do in the military, as for as T-shirt, is fine in civilian world. IE...T-shirt under your uniform.
As a civilian you can go without a t-shirt if you like......:001_cool:

For some reason I have always avoided boat shoes, probably because they were popular when I was a kid. I've been eyeing them when we go to the store, I may have to consider picking a pair up. I love flip flops, but hate shoes with no socks. I'll have to grab some no show socks.

Thanks for your reply!

I didn't mean undergarment tshirts (undershirts), I meant just like you can layer sweaters over dress shirts in the winter, could you like wise layer long sleeve tees in the warmer months. I now look back at that post and it seems silly, so its all good. But I have to wear undershirts under my polos and dress shirts, I hate the way it feels without one.

I am not a boat shoe fan, so I wear either a fashion sneaker or driving moc with shorts. I get the no show socks since I dont like sockless feet in shoes either.

I also would not do the long sleeve t shirt over a dress shirt. Go with the sport coat, or no sport coat.

I think flip flops still have a place in a mans wardrobe. Polo/tshirt, flat front shorts and flip flops to a BBQ for instance.

Have you thought about a cream linen jacket in addition to your navy blazer? Especially quarter or unlined? The cream linen jacket would give you a second go to summer jacket and allow you to rotate a bit more. The linen jacket has quickly become my summer 'uniform' with or without a tie (depending on the shirt) and with a panama if I'm out and about in town. I'd think the light linen jacket would still be a good luck in down south.

I get it...Like the guys on BIG BANG THEORY?

let me preface this by saying i'm a shamelessly preppy dresser and devotee of the book TAKE IVY - check out the pics! http://www.acontinuouslean.com/2008/05/19/take-ivy/

so up top, i go heavy with polos, button-down shirts (long and short sleeves) and t-shirts. all pretty much in solid colors. lotta blues in all tones/

downtown i wear a ton of flat-front chinos in a variety of colors, khakis, and even pastels. my approach is identical with shorts, and i throw in some madras for laughs.

for shoes, i mostly wear boat shoes sans socks. i have a bunch of retro sneakers, also sans socks. my go to summer sneakers are definitely my blue Vans.

for warmth, i stick to plain, grey, cotton sweatshirts, rugby shirts, windbreakers, and a particular Woolrich rain jacket which i'm in love with and wear until i die.

the blue blazer is an absolute must and i'm also a big fan of a madras jacket, as well as a lightly colored double breasted cotton jacket. this might require a bit of
chutzpah to pull off, but it's worth it.

accessories? get a couple of thin leather belts, and maybe a brightly colored canvas belt or two.

i strongly recommend that you reconsider this one! one of the great joys of summer is throwing on a button shirt with a few open for ventilation (and looks).
find a nice cotton, pale blue button-down and try it. i bet you'll be perfectly comfortable and guarantee you'll get a positive response from the missus.

No, just like a sweater. A v-neck t-shirt over a dress shirt, it would have the same look but not a warm for the non-winter months.

Its more of a self-concious thing, covers the 'chest flair' if you will

Words of wisdom there, on the cream linen.

"Forget it, Jake, it's chino-town."

Sebago Docksides w/o socks is the go-to from the first signs of spring until just before the snows fly. I am seriously thinking about a pair of white or dirty bucks this year, too.

Other than that, it is polo shirts and shorts. Plain front shorts - no cargo....ever - and feel free to add in madras.

Hard to tell from those Ivy league school pictures, but looks like a Penny loafers or similar simple styled shoe were the big fashion back then? Have they ever came close to overtaking the boat shoe in popularity since then? In terms of fashion, do you think Birkenstock's, Teva's, flip-flops ran their course yet or is it another decade of flip-flops and bad t-shirts?

It is nice to see that Gilligan had some education before his 3 hour tour. :biggrin1:

regarding loafers, i've always kept a pair of Weejuns. they're just a staple and have always been as popular as boat shoes. i still keep a pair of birkenstock clogs for their versatility. flip flops make sense for walking from your car to the beach. i have no earthly idea who wears tevas or why.

Never, I repeat never, wear flip flops with jeans or chinos.

Here in Dallas in the summer, that is all everyone wears.

I wear flip flops around my pool and to take out trash.

If I lived in the South in summer I would be wearing seersucker often. With a T-shirt under the jacket and cloth shoes like vans. I also don't like shoes with out socks so I buy loafer socks to wear with all my summer shoes.
