What's new

Suggest my next razor

I have a small collection of razors that I believe are diverse and give me good variety.

Current DE razors:
- Merkur Futur
- Merkur 39c slant
- Bakelite slant
- EJ 89
- Gillette Slim adjustable
- Gillette Guard (my travel razor)

I am thinking about getting an open comb R41. In general I prefer the more aggressive razors. Looking at the list below, do you think there is anything more I should get?

New: R41, New York Shaving Co. Mariner (up there with the R41 in terms of aggressiveness), Fatip.
Vintage: Old Type, NEW; on the SE side, MMOC.

If you are thinking about an R41, get one. I love mine. Plus, it seems to "respond" to cheaper blades, *cough*derby*cough*

If you want an R41 but have the shakes, get a Fatip.

BTW, you have an awesome collection already.

To my experience, Fatip Piccolo or Pils. Former if you are for a treat and latter if you are for easy/no brain shaves. What's bakelite slant like?

I must have expensive taste. I, (my face and head that is), prefer a nice sharp quality blade in mine. You will not be disappointed with the R41, who I affectionately call "The Mistress" for obvious reasons. Lack of respect = punishment.

Fatboy. No collection is complete without one IMO...

Is it very different than the slim?

Thanks :) I have a varied software collection too. Maybe I get to post that some day. I am now leaning towards the R41.

Pils is too expensive for me. The piccolo seems interesting.

Gillette NEW (short or long comb)...should be able to find one on BST then have Dave at West Coast Razors replate it

The bakelite is an interesting razor. Its very different than anything else I have - has no weight, bakelite feels different than metal on skin and the head shape is also much rounder. You get a lot more control with it, but have to put in the effort yourself. I have shaved with it about 5 times and have gotten good shaves always.

I would go for the R41. In my experience, you will get a closer shave with that than any Merkur, and a better one than many straight razors.

I've been wanting to get a Feather AS-D1. I hear it's the premier shaving razor. Maybe that'll be last and only one you'll ever need.
