Maybe they're too fragile at that length? I really don't know, and had that question myself.I had never thought of that, but you still would be wasting 2 full inches of 3x1 only making them 6" long.
Why not make them 8x1 if cutting that way?
Was he selling them for more than 30 U.S each? Given the labor he would have to sell them for a lot more.
