Strop Belt

Since I can't find a used strop (I have a WTB ad for a strop) and don't want to spend much because I don't know if I'll stick with a straight edge how about this.....can I use my 1 3/4" wide and 32" long genuine leather cowhide belt? Seems like it'd be better than newspaper....

In fact, I already used a belt during some days when I temporarily have been without any strop.
