Strange Fatboy. Beveled dial?

I came across a fatboy that is really odd. Instead of a smooth round dial, this one is not round - it is made to simulate 'round' by a lot of bevels.
There are other oddities about this razor too. Discolorations with an ostrich leather-like pattern. They look like they're on the surface, but polishing shows that they go deep. The finish on the doors way down by the blade looks 'rippley', like something flowing.

Anybody have any ideas that would explain all 3?

Here is the best photo I have. It's hard to capture the bevels in a photo, as they tend to look like normal reflections off a normal dial.

It's an E1.

I'll be away all afternoon, but look forward to reading when I get back. Thanks!

Wish 'ya had more pictures. The only thing I can tell at this moment is that the adjuster ring is farther up the shaft, placing it closer to the head. This leaves a gap between the adjuster ring and the knurled portion of the handle. I also see what you mean by "bevels". The areas where the numbers are on are somewhat flat. Interesting, I've never see that before. Hopefully someone will have some answers. It's cool to see some of the production design changes that Gillette tried.

Is it the same all the way around?

More pics sir.....more pics if you will.

Maybe someone with a Tool and Die background can see something to explain this oddity.

You're way more of an expert in this stuff than I am but the only difference I see between that model and the FB I have is under the head.

The difference you see on the underside is open vs closed doors.I see flats on the number dial.I have three fatboys and none of mine are like that.

Doesn't look any different to me than the E4 Fatboy I had. Maybe I'm missing something.

look at M80s post above, the little bar bits connect on the bevel dial, and not on the regular.

plus if you look at the first of the second lot of pics that the OP posted, you can see that the dial instead of round on yours, is like octagonal or something.

Dunny,

I see exactly what you mean but if you look at the other pictures of the same razor, you'll understand what you are seeing is an optical illusion.

The dial does seem to be bevelled though!

Machining step missed?
