What's new

straight razor

Hello fellows
I saw this straight razor at a antique store. It was a W Greaves son Sheffield England . AME, what ever that stands for. The blade looked to be fairly wide, about an inch. IT had a groove at the end of the blade. The blade did look in good condition, no pits, a few tarnish spots. The
handle looked like it was wood but could have been bone. IT looked and felt heavier then the other razors he had. He said he would sell it for $49.00. looks like it had little use. Does this sound like a good deal.

Although this is probably a reasonable deal. (Hard to tell without seeing the razor.) If this is your first straight razor I would suggest choosing another vintage razor. Although W. Greaves & Sons made quality razors I think it is likely to be a wedge type blade. If you are new to straights I would suggest choosing a full hollow blade as it tends to be more forgiving. There are many quality vintage straights for sale on the B/S/T for very reasonable prices. Look for one that is shave ready. Good luck.:thumbup1:

By your description it sounds like a chopper. If indeed it is then it's probably a good buy.If you are new to using a straight they are a bit tough to maneuver due to the width and weight. When mastered they are a joy to use.

Thanks for the replies.Since I would ne new to straight razors, I Believe I will look for something a little easier to work with.

Welcome to B&B!

Sounds good, if you could get a picture and the sizes it would be good.
