Straight Razor Acquisition Thread

This one I got recently fairly cheap for a japanese blade. Gonna show one or two before photos which helps explain why it was cheap and can help those who want japanese blades but cant afford the 150-250 price for one. My tip. If you find one that the blade is in really good shape but the scales are scratched and dull get it. Get a set of micromesh sandpaper to 12k grit. I wet sanded the scales to 12k grit. I have yet to flitz polish the scales and may not since OMG the scales are gorgeous after just 12k wet sand.

You cant really see on the original photos but the scales had light scratches all over them and were extremely dull and hard to tell really the underlying pattern. Also it doesn't show well but the scales now look like glass. They are so shiny. I loved the razor before wet sanding the scales but after wet sanding I couldn't believe how gorgeous the scales are.

I can only imagine. I know how much better my nicer razors look in person compared to photo. It really is pretty, well done

Thank you. This is the first razor I was able to bring the scales back to this condition. I've gotten a couple scales to look decent, but this is amazing.

Now I just have to learn to hone properly. I'm getting better but still the finished product off of the 12k naniwa is not as good as it should be. Lots of razor burn on my neck. The razors I bought from Ryan from shave armory go to the naniwa 12k stone and they are amazing. I even got the exact stone Ryan uses because I love razors finished on it. I do have the good jnat and I need to learn how to properly use that as well. I am pretty frustrated since I can take my EDC pocket knife and hone it on the diamond hones then finish on ceramic rods and have an edge that shaves arm hair but is durable enough that I can cut up 105 boxes and stab 4 drain holes in two tin buckets before i have to touch up the edge. Why i am so frustrated is my pocket knife i have to determine the angle. I have to hold it at the precise angle. A razor you just lay it flat on the stone. Why the hell can i do knives so easily but i cant get a razor to have a great edge.

Just arrived today and can not wait to use it. I’ve bought from this seller before so I know it’s shave ready. Kikuboshi 24 kamisori grind in beautiful condition

Oh man the Rifle razor and the Salamander are awesome!!!!

Thanks. He said the Rifle was the best of the 4 but that the Salamander had been difficult to get a good edge on.
I really like the scales on the Demascar. And i like that the Venues is shoulderless plus it looks to have bone scales but i don't know how to tell for sure.

Looks like bone from the picture. What natural light-colored materials were used for scales beyond ivory, horn, and bone? I never see horn carved. Carved ivory will support more intricate carving. So, bone to me.

The small dark spots in the center
make it look extremely very much like bone.

Just purchased some older display cases for my straights collection and the lady made me take a bag of small items that were in the cases. Long short this little guy was in the pile. .happy surprise..just need to polish it up

My newest acquisitions.
A Hess 44 stainless ~7/8” that I’m going to replace the warped scales on.
An American Knife co Sheffield grind 13/16”
A beautiful mk30
A Rodgers 13/16” wedge with a faint “fine India steel” etching
Finally one of my new favorite razors I own.
A F.Fenney tally ho 8/8” near wedge with the most ornate etching I’ve seen. The etching is deep almost like it was stamped into the blade. The box says “won the prize medal 1851*”. So cool.
