These two unusual profile Bengalls, complete with a pretty smart case, popped up on FB Marketplace the other day for not a huge amount of $.

Just received them and I’m rather pleased - they’re in very good condition and shouldn’t take long to get to working order. The second, horn-scaled, one is particularly nice I think.

Haha! They're quite cool aren't they. I don't usually bother making old razors look completely shiny and pristine again, so it's nice occasionally to get ones that pretty much are already :).

Does anybody know what the kind of little extra bump bit on the heel is for...? (@Steve56)

I know @Luc did some very interesting research into this exact razor, but I'm not sure the purpose of the bump was ever got to the bottom of (apart from apparently it's going to be a pain to hone!)

I had one with a big heel and ended up using a Dremel. It was a pain to hone. Sure, I could've worked around it but it was easier to remove it. It wasn't a popular venue but it was pain. Did it add anything to the shave? I did not notice anything.

Ask me about shaving naked!
(apart from apparently it's going to be a pain to hone!)

You can simply not run the stabilizer up on the hone or you can grind the heel off.

Either will work, but learning to not hone the stabilizer is a skill worth acquiring IMO, especially if you hone razors for others who may not care for a ground off heel or a honed stabilizer. They generally want their razor back looking like it was when it was sent.

Yeah - I have in the past found myself honing the stabilizer on razors a bit, so pay more attention to it now. TBH I don't really use the very heel of a razor's edge much, so don't really need to push it as far as possible.

That particular razor I actually found very easy to hone, and the bump bit didn't appear to make any difference at all. I assumed I wasn't meant to try be honing the bump bit - to my mind it's just a bump rather than being an extension of the edge (?)

Correct. And it shouldn't get in the way of the honing.
