Straight Razor Acquisition Thread

A bit like driving a sports car, or walking on a tightrope ... i've got a small cut too 😅
As a fan of 3/8 and 4/8 razors, I like your sports car analogy. Once you get used to shaving with a razor of that shape, it's amazing how great it is for details and neck hollows. It's a precision instrument in a world of cow tools.

have a weakness for TI's

this one went for a good price with added horn tang to boot.

sheffield steel in good condition is hard enough to come by let alone with added bonus.

it been a while since I've seen a TI with horn tang. it also been quite a while since I've bought a razor. takes something special to move me these days

be well all.

Henckels 68
I have no idea of the vintage of this razor. I found it wild, lurking in the leather sheath with a clasp. When I was paying for it, the clerk looked closely and suggested the scales might be ivory. I have no experisnce with ivory scales, but here are some close ups. It is only pinned at the pivot.

Standard plastic Henckels scales. They used this ivory imitation pattern on their Friodurs.

Having looked more closely, I am sure it's not ivory. With the Graef & Schmidt stamp and the pre-war look of the show side tang stamps, and comparing to my Friodur 472 1/2, I'd say that it is an older razor, with different plastic than the Friodurs. Perhaps celluloid?

After having a few quiets a couple of weeks ago I decided it would be a good idea to check online auction sites. A few razors caught my eye and I placed bids on them. I expected I might be in the running to win one, but alas, that was not the case.

These are the two that have arrived so far.IMG_20211027_121428.jpgIMG_20211027_121540.jpg
The top one is a 4/8 Ingeborg "Oxinal razor" and "Best Sheffield Silver Steel". It was tree topping right out of the box.

The second is a Rigarazor and was advertised as 23mm. It seems to be 8/8 when put next to a tape. It is a hefty chunk of steel and is absolutely stunning. The pictures did not do it justice. My bid was on the low end of what these typically sell for so I'm happy with the outcome.

Here is a pic of the two for comparisonIMG_20211027_121622.jpg
I am still waiting on two razors to arrive and they should be here within the next few days.

Just managed to pick this up. Holbem and Co. Age guess would be 1760 - 1790 but who knows. Got it for a good price so I'm very happy. I need a pre 1800 razor in the collection.

If that razor could talk, I’m sure it would have some great stories to tell.

I still do not own a pre 1800 razor and would like to learn more about restoring such, so please let us know how you get on with the Holbem, @johnmrson.
I'll post photos of the process. I'm not sure I can save the scales. They look too far gone but I'll give it a try. I'll see if I can fill in all the holes with epoxy resin. If that doesn't work I'll use them as a template and make some new ones out of horn. The blade should be relatively straight forward.

Friodur 2.0

The Friodur is back from Dion at DC Blades in Queensland and he did an amazing job. He made some custom acrylic scales that actually fit the razor. It’s nothing like the original but I think the transparent blue is pretty cool.

He confirmed my suspicion that the scales the razor came with were from a different model. He also cleaned up the jimps and honed out some micro chips on the edge. This is my first professionally honed razor. I’m looking forward to testing it tomorrow to see how my self taught edges compare to the pros.

I’m really happy with how this one turned out and fully recommend DC Blades to anyone in Australia needing help with a razor. Great communication, high quality work and a quick turnaround. I really appreciated the progress shots for approval pre-pinning. Nice work!
