Coat the gold with nail polish/lacquer, polish the steel then remove the lacquer. Any metal polish except jnat slurry will remove/fade the gold.

Steve, how do remove the lacquer afterwards without removing the gold wash?

Nail polish remover or lacquer thinner. You might want to touch bases with Alfredo, he does it a lot more than I do.

I can't believe lacquer thinner does not remove the gold wash but that's all that removes lacquer.
It removes damn near everything!

It isn’t foil or leaf I don't think, it’s some kind of plate.

Finally posting this 6/8 Cadman and Sons Bengall, from njtnjt via BST. It came with a truly strop and shave edge, I just proved it tonight. A very clean and professional re-scaling.

Will do, though I must admit it's the main reason I bought the lot. Never heard of Wilson, Hawksworth & Moss, though it looks like a nice razor. And I already own two beautiful FRs. But I've been lusting after a (reasonably priced) Packwood for some time now.

6/8 Kropp from the 1920’s. Surface rust only, so no issues at the edge. Small chip near toe before restore. La Dressante au Bleu bevel set to finish.

According to Zak Jarvis, India steel began showing up around 1830 and was fairly common for a couple of decades, but was still used occasionally later on. Looking at yours I’d say it’s fairly early.
