Stirrup leather for diy

At the tack shop nearby, they sell stirrup leathers.

This is horse leather, a strip five feet long and three or four inches wide. Fairly thick. It hangs from your saddle down to, of course, your stirrup hardware where you rest your boot.

They sell them in pairs, obviously. Most cowboys have two legs.

$56 bucks for the pair. Which would make ten strops.

It feels soft, not hard and slippery, so should have a fair bit of draw.

Anybody had experience using this type of leather for making strops?

Thanks in advance.

You seem to be holding all the cards. So why not give it a shot and report back? Personally, I prefer hard and slippery to a fair bit of draw at the end of the game.

Seems like it would work. I'm sure it's better than the newspaper strops I've seen mentioned.

I've read that rolling with a pin helps flatten and improve the finish for stropping. I've rolled a strop to flatten it after shipping and it does help.
