Sterilizing straight razors

Hi guys,
I know this question has been asked previously, so can you point me in the right direction????

Also, I don't have any Barbicide, so how do I sterilise the razor without damaging the scales?

Any advice would be helpful.

Wrong forum, but a glass jar full or 70% rubbing alchohal will work, rub the scales with mineral oil after.

You dont need to - nothing can survive on clean, dry metal for >24 hours, so just post it and the sterilizing will happen while its in transit. You could also sit the blade in the sun, where UV light will do the work, too.

I don't think that is actually correct. Things like Hep can actually survive for a long time on surfaces.... even if dry.

I was looking at the Classic Shaving site and they sell Tim Zowado razors. (I was looking at them for fun, can't afford one of those!) In the care section, they say you can boil the blade for 5 minutes to sterilize. But you have to be careful not to bang the blade or boil the scales.

Me, I think I'd use a little alcohol and call it a day.

1. 70% Alcohol
2. 1 part bleach 10 parts water (some say 4 parts water, might wanna google it or something)
3. Barbicide (probably optional, alcohol and bleach solutions are probably enough)

That should kill just about everything you need to worry about.... as far as I know lol.

Thanks guys for the advice,
I got hold of some Barbicide, just for peace of mind.

I'm sure that once the razors been lying around for a few years unused, and then washed, polished, alcohol rubbed and bleach soaked, and then finally soaked in Barbicide...............nothing's going to be living on it!

Cheers

I was watching a program on the CDC one time and they acutally use Lysol spray. They said it kills every bacteria known to man. When they come out of the lab in their space suits they come into a small room with a shower that has Lysol in it and shower in the suit before removing it.

I use to like the liquid Lysol you could buy in the dark brown bottle. That's the Lysol with some real punch. Just add it to the mop water, clean up pail or even the dog's bath. That Lysol.....IMO....was the real McCoy. Killed everything and left the surface with a fresh Lysol aroma.

The stuff in the Aerosol can with the fragrances is not the same. I guess the liquid Lysol has taken the same route as the vintage Gillette's. Too bad! :thumbdown:thumbdown

Tutti Fruttti, Cheers

Use Clippercide that barbers spray on hair clippers in the orange can. I used it and because it's sprayed on the clippers and then use it on a persons head its no problem. As a matter of fact I spray my blade down with it, it has oil and rust protection in it, and anti everything. When its time to shave I take the blade and just shave, no problems at all, and easy to use no need to rinse.

If you like me, really dig vintage straights, whatever you do, DO NOT read Steinbecks "East of Eden" :scared:
I just finished it & it really made me hesitate & think a bit when I reached for my vintage Heljestrand in the morning.
"Where have you been my friend?" I thought when I held it in my hand. If you've read it, you'll understand me.
