Sterilized U.S. Standard Restoration

I usually don't do to many restorations. As I can make brushes faster than restore them  But this set happen to catch my eye from the Bay. This was is a Sterilized U.S. Standard brush restored with a 18mm silvertip. I originally sanded the handle & put an oil finish, didn't like that, so I dyed it red, didn't like that either, than painted it white, no good as well. So I finally felt the black finish was the best. Several coats of water base poly over black Gesso. The top of the stand was missing, so I cut a little malachite cap for it. Thanks for looking

Yes. Its hard to get the finish right because I find I can never truly visualize the completed project properly. I've had to re-start from scratch a couple of times as well. The problem I had was I had to be careful with the over sanding to remove each subsequent coat because I didn't want to risk changing the original brush shape and size to much

I like the brush alot. I LOVE the malachite fineal. That is going to make a great display piece. Thanks for sharing the pics.

This is the nicest repainted wood restoration I've seen. They usually look a bit sloppy to me. Great job!

Thanks, That's because there are 3 coats of black gesso with sanding between each coat and 6 coats of water base poly with sanding between every other coat, then buffed. good finishes don't just happen, they take time. and thats why I don't do restorations, they take way to much time. But if you have the time, it can be a very relaxing & fun hobby.

Great work!! I am especially impressed by the lettering, did you use enamel or an epoxy enamel? I've been trying to figure out how to do a good job on that sort of thing, I'm pretty good with finishes but that has me stumped so far. By the by that's never hand lettered is it?? Excellent resto that looks like a well kept original. :w00t:

Michael's sells a product called "Rub & Buff" it is a filler available in white, black gold, silver. Just fill in and wipe off. I use to use this, but now I use a product from Laser Bits which is almost the same type of fill. Not sure, but I think they are an acrylic paste.

Yes, no hand lettering. stamped or lasered.

I went to Laser Bits and bought some of the white and black, I new there was a way to do the lettering well. You're a superhero, just you and Batman left:w00t:
