What's new

Step up from Edwin Jagger DE89

Hey guys. :) I'm a newbie to this forum but I've been shaving with an Edwin Jagger DE89L for a year now. I've always wanted to try out a more aggressive TTO style razor, so I'm thinking about purchasing the Parker 99R as I've heard that it's aggressive and it is of better quality than other Parker models. What are your thoughts? Any razor under 50 USD is my budget.

Forget new. Get a vintage Gillette

My 40's SS came in yesterday and I shaved with it this morning. It was FANTASTIC! It is definitely more aggressive than the 89, but I managed to not bleed everywhere. I thought it was a perfect step up, although I still do love my 89 :) check eBay for them. I got mine for 20 flat (including shipping)

All the vintage gillette's (fatboys, slims, superspeeds etc.)look pretty good as well. :x Kinda torn between that and Merkur Progress. I'm little bit concerned about damage that there might be with the used Gillette's though.

You will soon learn that there is no such thing as a "step up"

They are all just shuffles sideways :001_smile

Your concern is reasonable seeing how the 40 style are almost 65 years old now since production! However, you just have to keep a keen eye when you're on ebay. Better yet, check the listings here at B&B

Gillette SuperSpeed Red Tip! Heavier razor, moderately aggressive, fantastic handle, and there are lots on eBay in great condition for reasonable prices.

You could save yourself $50 and just put a shim or two in your EJ. You'd have yourself a more aggressive razor for the cost of something you'd be throwing away anyway.

After getting into DE safety razor shaving last August, and having tried many razors, I would offer this. I have the EJ89 - a great solid bar shaver. I think the next step is either an adjustable, or even better, an open comb razor. Once you get the hang of it, a good open comb razor is tough to beat. I'm currently getting much closer, more satisfying shaves, from a vintage open comb Gillette Sheraton TTO. Closer than my DE89, Gillette Slim adjustable, or Black Beauty Adjustable. As always, YMMV.

Ah, 1962. The guy that sold it has a ton of other awesome razors for sale :). My idea for getting a twist to open was from seeing classic Gillete razors, so I just sort of went for the real thing instead of a modern one like a parker or Futur. Thanks for the suggestions guys, you really helped.
