Actually, with a razor like the 2011 R41, it's safer (whether or not it's better) to use a steep angle--you're less likely to cut yourself.
Yes. [like I'm an authority]Does it count if I do 3 passes shallow, then a final touchup pass steep?
It's real shaving for sure, at least with the right razor (and the technique works with all of my razors). But it does tend to dull blades faster.I'm a ATG shaver, have been since I was 15. 3 passes with one of my Gillette Adjustable's, 2 with my Weber PH or Variant, plus touch up for a BBS, I'ts rare that I cut my self, my hand seems to know not to. I don't think it will work well with any of my SE razors tho. Judging from the illustration above it still looks like scraping and dulling the blade faster. but I will try it.

I like @1Cal, I am also an Excalibur member, and we both can get over 80 shaves from a single blade using a steep angle. Logic would tell you blades should not last as long shaving steep, but actual results disagree. But it does tend to dull blades faster.
That makes me think of a question--by chance do you flip your blades?I like @1Cal, I am also an Excalibur member, and we both can get over 80 shaves from a single blade using a steep angle. Logic would tell you blades should not last as long shaving steep, but actual results disagree.
Yup, it counts. I may have been more clear that if you tend towards a steeper angle your in. I think if you tend towards a steeper angle on any pass that counts. Welcome aboard and feel free to add SASA to your signature.Does it count if I do 3 passes shallow, then a final touchup pass steep?
Me too! Welcome aboard SASA G-Dogg! Good to have another failed shaver aboard in one of the best kept, open, secrets shaving alliance aka SASA!!!I'm in, too! Steep angles and open combs are a marriage made in heaven.
And I put pressure on my razor head as well - basically, I failed Shave School.
Sorry it didn't work out for you. Well done giving it the good Army go though! This morning I tried the steep angle. My face feels like I rubbed it with sandpaper. Did 3 passes WTG, XTG, and ATG. Used the angle as suggested in diagram and adjusted to ware the blade would cut. In over 55 years of shaving my face never felt so raw with too many nicks. As it is said, to each their own way of shaving. but this old dog will go back to the way I was taught. My wife just gave me some Aspercreme, face feels better. It's great you guys like the steep angle, I tried and failed.

I don't think @rudyt flips his blades. But on my last run, which was 120 great shaves, I flipped my blade each shave. That makes me think of a question--by chance do you flip your blades?

Sure, sometimes a shave on the left edge and sometimes on the right edge ;-) I'm guessing that's not what you meant...That makes me think of a question--by chance do you flip your blades?
ATG on the first try was a recipe for irritation. How did your face feel after only the first WTG pass? This morning I tried the steep angle. My face feels like I rubbed it with sandpaper. Did 3 passes WTG, XTG, and ATG.
I'd say you're an independent thinker who doesn't blindly follow instructions. I don't believe in the "no pressure" thing either. I always use light pressure, and find with steep angle shaving, a bit of pressure helps stretch the skin taught, making for a more comfortable shave when the shave count gets up there.I'm in, too! Go for it. Super Speeds also work steep, even my Blue Tip. I only have a few DE razors that don't work well steep, the oval-slot Tech and RazoRock slants.I'm in! My R41 taught me to go steep, followed by my piccolo. This thread makes me want to go back to my other razors and try steep too - e.g. Superspeeds

Not good, I should have stopped at the first WTG pass, readjusted angle for second pass. I just knew the 3rd was going to be disaster. I wouldn't even think of trying steep shaving with a SR or SE. Now I know not to do it with a DE. I can say I tried steep shaving but I'll stay with the traditional way of shaving.ATG on the first try was a recipe for irritation.
