State of the "Collection" February 2017

Ten years plus in as a member of Badger & Blade and I present my first "State of the Collection" as far as straight razors go. Brushes, hones, creams, soaps, aftershaves, and EDT's are a bit in flux.

Strops are solid with my original Tony Miller 3" Latigo which rarely sees time but it is quite sentimental and I would never let it go after over 9 years owning it. Secondly, my Kanayama #3 purchased close to 3 years ago gets 99% of any laps from razors these days. I often find myself placing more expensive Kanayama strops in my online carts but I have yet to pull the trigger because I truly am happy with the #3 and believe I've settled very well with it alone. As for any future strop purchases of any kind, doubtful.

I have sold off quite a few razors that were very dear to me to get to this point. My remaining ones are as follows:

Recently acquired partial 7 day set, 5 Joh. Engstrom from turn of the 20th Century Tiffany & Co. New York cased. I will over time seek out as close to original replacements for the two missing of the set.

Michael Hunter & Son Sheffield Wedge with British Light Infantry etched horn scales and original coffin. This was the third razor I ever purchased and it has been sold twice and traded once and then reacquired with several years between. I learned my lesson.

My Great Great Grandfather George Rook of Liverpool, England brought a Wade & Butcher on a steamship headed for America in 1858. I have it in my collection along with it's original coffin.

I am on a purchase hiatus for the foreseeable future with the exception of filling the two missing slots in the 7 day set. I am trying to imagine what would make me break that vow and nothing really comes to mind. I will live vicariously through my brothers of B&B and cheer them on as they unveil their razor goods.

Please feel free to respond with photos of your current SOTC. I would love to see them!

What a nice collection! And so nice that there is a family connexion and some nostalgia as well.

My compliments.

I had these offered to me today but at a price very dear and I just couldn't do it. They are quite lovely. I am sticking to my plan to complete the Engstrom set and avoid purchases. Still................................... these Tornblom were spectacular.

One of the biggest straight razor collectors in the US and not a B&B member. But if you want his email...... he also has another 4 day Tornblom set and a 7 day set of MK31's in plastique

Jonathan Hunt was a Sheffield cutler who Lummus wrote only produced wares from 1829-1837 so he is fairly obscure and his work quite fine.

I have fallen a bit off the wagon and purchased a couple interesting sets myself in the past couple of days, expanding my "collection".

I started off with a PIF'd Genco Henry's XXX.
Followed that with restoring my grand dad's Genco de Roma...
I found the KAMA at a local antique store. It was in the condition you see in the photo.
Found the KT at an antique store. It followed me home.
The Revisor was suggested along with the Morley & Sons... Couldn't say no...
A friendly antique dealer I've known for years asked me to take the HMC Bossing out of her shop before a kid got hurt.
Found the HMC Warranted a week later at a flea market...
The Wade & Butcher was a lucky find at an antique store I'd visited many times with no luck.

I think I'm solidly hooked! It's also time for a hiatus...

Bob...your collection looks amazing. You have excellent taste. ALL look to be telling a story, an inspired selection process that has fallen into place so nicely for you!

Thanks Mike. I am enjoying these things. Best of all, my wife is no longer ready to dial 911 when they are in use.
