Starter sets

Hello,

My stepson, Thomas, expressed an interest in wet shaving. Apparently, he has a shavette, but is still using shaving cream from a can. Since we have something in common, I thought I would buy him a starter set so he could try using a brush and soap. There are three on Amazon. All have a brush with a stand, soap and a bowl. Do you have any thoughts? I like that the VDH sets both have a reusable bowl. Admittedly, I am annoyed that they repriced the luxury set to $0.01 under the cost for free shipping (still $10 more expensive than it was a month ago). Anyway, The VDH luxury set is pricey compared to the others. Is it worth it?

My brother in law picked up the VDH luxury set at Target for $20 and he really likes it. Not all Targets seem to carry them but if you have on close by it would be worth checking it out.

I would suggest the Omega kit, the soap is a great entry into good quality soaps the brush on the other hand is ok. Not the greatest but ok. My local pharmacy carries the other 2, I tried them about a year ago, when I was still using cartridge razors. And they just turned me off of using soap and a brush and I went back to canned creams for a while. Thank goodness I found this forum and go some quality soap suggestions and a great brush.

Edit: Just remembered I believe someone told me that the soap in the Omega kit is actually just prorasso, which is a good quality soap.

For a good starter kit why not look at the offerings from WCS or the Italian Barber. They have some great offerings in decent price ranges.

Thank you all. I checked out Target, but couldn't find anything. I opted to take the advice to check out the Italian Barber. They really did have some nice options. I think my stepson will be happy.

Thank you Hudson. That is a good idea. I will definitely purchase some supplies from Garry. It is a great way to try things out.

I'd go with a starter kit from Gary's Sample Shop or West Coast Shaving/similar. I trust their offerings and suspect that the components will be of at least equal if not better quality.

Go with Cella over Arko if you prefer almond scents to lemno cleanser scents.
