Star Shaving, did I make a mistake?

Maybe I'm just accustomed to great online vendor service (like WCS, Superior Shave, Shaving.ie, etc).

After hearing pretty much good stuff about the "Big Daddy" strops offered by Star Shaving, I ordered one. My Paypal account processed payment like...right NOW. Fair enough. But...not a word or sneeze about my purchase, just a canned response that "You will be notified when item is shipped". No word so far..payment placed 2:30 pm last Wednesday.

This purchase was my 2nd choice. I wanted a Petrzelka (B&B member) but he was out of product and couldn't offer a definitive shipping date. So here I sit.....did I screw up with this Star Shaving offer? Maybe I can contest the order and by this time Daniel will have his leather in by now?..

Good vendor very slow service. It's a part time gig for them. I also heard that the owner had some personal issues in the past. Just be a little patient. Its well worth it.

Contact them after 10 days and no product. Any less than 10 days just be patient and wait.

Don't think 10 days is gonna cut it as I have no strop at all to fall back on. But that will prove to be my problem. Live and learn I suppose. Have to say the whole "Made by Hand in the USA" played a big part here. I've never had a problem with paying for exceptional service (I spent a career lifetime in a field where substandard or mediocre service could cost you plenty..up to and including your continued employment). Makes me appreciate vendors such as those earlier mentioned.

I ordered a big daddy and a paddle strop. It took long enough to arrive that I started to get worried, and they did not reply to my questions, but when they finally arrived I was happy with the product.edit: and I don't think they posted a tracking number, so I was surprised as well when it arrived.-Paul

Some companies are all about good shipping and notification, tracking numbers etc. Some aren't. I guess some are small and just can't ?
I love Mikes Soaps for example. He is a small operation and it takes awhile to get your product. I have placed my second order with him and Both times I got no notice from him that my order was received. Many companies email you thanking you and letting you know you'll be notified when it ships. Last order I didn't get notice of shipment either. But again...he is small and busy I guess. But it's always great when you hear from the place you ordered.

I have dealt with them on a few occasions and had no problem. But yeah as others have indicated it is a small operation and some times they have other priorities to juggle. Email them. Definitely.

When you get your strop I don't think you will wonder if you made a bad choice or not. Nobody puts out a strop like that certainly for that price.

Hi. I just received a really nice strop from him. Received within a week. Beautiful workmanship, so afraid to scar it up.

What were doing previously for a strop? Ive read that you could use a leather portfolio cover with care if in a pinch.

Take a whole sheet of newspaper and fold it longways over and over until it is a out 3" wide and loop one end over your towel rod. Pinch the ends together, pull it tight, and strop. Works pretty good.

That is exactly what I wrote yesterday but decided not to post it as the OP seemed to only want to jump on the vender not much else so I just deleted it and went to another thread where I could be helpful.

Water damage pretty much trashed my old one. I had put it up for a while and by the time I discovered it, there was nothing I could pull out of the hat to restore it. Sigh...

Thanks for the advice on the newspaper. Never heard of that before, but then there is plenty I have not heard of before.

Not necessarily throwing the vendor under the bus but let's face it, some of us consumers out there are inclined to take a more favorable view of businesses who offer quicker service and better communications than those smaller operations who kind of wing it as they have other priorities than their part-time business. As I earlier stated, I am one of those guys who will prefer Nordstrom's vs. a more parochial styled operation. Based on what I have heard, I shall receive a well made product for a pretty good price. Can't really ask for more. My original concern (as I have never heard of this outfit before) was not knowing there was a fair chance of this order taking so long. All being said and done now, I will patiently watch my mailbox and be sure to pick up a newspaper tomorrow. By the way...do the color Sunday comics work any better than the black & white section? (C'mon, that was a joke)

Any time I deal with an artisan or one man shop or have a custom or special order or request I always allow 10-14 days for completion of my request.

I just waited 3 months for 7 custom hats to be made for me. Sure I would have loved to walked in and picked them off of the rack but I was willing to wait the time that was necessary for them to be custom made for me.

At the opposite end of that I ordered from Phil (Bull Goose Shaving) on Tuesday and had the items in my mail box on Thursday (2 days from order to delivery)

I newspaper stropped for months before allowing a blade to touch leather. It's been so long since I have used a straight that I would more than likely go back to newspaper for a few weeks before grabbing my TM and trusting myself on it.

wow, am I happy to have seen this tip! as a 'straight learner in waiting', destroying a beautiful new piece of leather is more intimidating that scarring my face!

A very good idea. The newspaper is expendable and is easily and cheaply replaced.
