Stainless replated in black chrome

My holy grail razor system: Weber Bulldog handle with Feather head and Ikon baseplates.

As I have posted before I have arrived at this razor system after several years of DE shaving. Unfortunately the parts all had different colors, from unplated raw steel to several different platings. I therefore sent it to Dave at www.restoredrazors.com (user onotoman on B&B). Dave replated it in black chrome after grinding down the Ikon parts to Feather standards.

Here are the results from Dave. I had earlier posted a picture and there was a brief discussion about how black the black chrome really is. Below is a comparison to my sons EJ Faux Ivory/chrome handle. The oak table could also serve as a comparison! Sorry about this but I now have two malfunctioning cameras!

I think that the black chrome plating suits the modern look of this razor very well. It is not solid black (like on a gun) and not cold bright chrome, which I don't like! What do you think? I have not asked Dave if the color could be modified in any direction, but that might be a possibility.

Please note that replating a stainless razor is no easy task. Dave had to use gold as a first layer and then nickel and black chrome. I know for a fact that a few local platers in Sweden don't do stainless at all because of this.

Looks really nice. I am drooling over those machined stainless razors. You must have a bunch of money tied up in that thing now. Care to share how much?

Why the multiple base plates? Do you rotate? I had not thought about multiple base plates with a single head plate.

The Feather AS-D1 razor was bought when it came out on the market 2010 and the price was considerably lower than now. The Weber handle was 35 US$ and the Ikon parts 37.50 a piece. Dave charged 65 £ for the grinding and plating. This work brougth the system to the Feather level in finish!

I use the baseplates to compensate for the mellowing of the blad. I start with the Feather baseplate and a sharp blade. After 3 or 4 shaves (2+ passes) I change to the OSS baseplate and after a further 3-4 shaves to the Open Comb plate. I hardly ever use the SB Ikon baseplate, if I do it's with a very durable blade.

Sometimes I just use the OC and old time blades like Timor or the Polsilver in brown package. The OC is comparable to a Gillette NEW in that respect.

What a gorgeous system. You sir, have obviously spent a great deal of time figuring out what works for you. Is this system your entire rotation? I really like the Black Chrome, it just makes the whole system pop, good choice.

Is this system your entire rotation?

I'm inclined to say yes to that. I do have a '47 Aristocrat and a '37 Sheraton but they don't get used much. My NEW and old do not see daylight at all.

The reason for this is that the black chrome system just works for me.
I bought the Feather AS-D1 when it appeared on the market just to check out the quality of the thing. After a while, well 18 months (I'm a slow thinker...:001_tongu), I noticed that I reached for it very often. You can say that the razor chose me! By that time I only used vintage Gillettes. The shave from the Feather transcends the scale of mild to aggressive. It demands a focus in use but rewards the shaver with a unique experience.

The Ikon baseplates are just to compensate for the blade mellowing. Because I'm lazy it's easier to change baseplates than razors!

The Weber handle is the most comfortable and balanced SS handle I have tried. I think that the length has someting to do with it. It's exactly like the vintage Gillettes, 3 inches!

Finally for looks I just had to make all the parts have the same plating. This was quite a task but Dave pulled it off after some surprises. Suffice to say that not all platers will take on this challenge ( at least a second time!).

I have been testing and planning this system for three years now and I can assure you that it won't be replaced!

I finally succeeded in getting my own camera into play. Here are some better pictures for you to see.

The last picture shows a comparison to a EJ Faux ivory Chrome handle. The black chrome is not that black!

For anyone wondering about the name convention of the pictures Ilmarinen is a mythological blacksmith from pre Christian Finnish mythology. He was able to forge anything for the Finns. I was born and raised in Finland.
